bearsfolife, you're kinda pathetic.

exercise improves brain function and quality of life, why shouldn't learning about and applying good exercise technique be something required in general education/liberal arts classes?

For me, I think some of the other general education classes are bunk, but not one that teaches the benefits of exercise and proper nutrition habits.... people can live until their 95 years old without knowing much about geology or history, but knowing these things and continuing to take a daily trip to the donut shop and eating as much trans fatty acids as one can will impede the ability to live a happy 95 year long life. And that's a f'n fact.

bearsfolife just seems like another suburban wannabe thug with his excellent grammar that portrays him as from "the streets" as it were.

And yes, I love learning. If I didn't, I would have transferred to a school that I can get an easy 4.0 and sail into law school with. Instead, I'm going to the University of Chicago. But hey, have fun at UIUC. I'm sure you'll be yet another anti-intellectual frat boy date raping someone at Kam's. /eyeroll

so if you make friends by doing things with people who have shared interests, doesn't the idea of FORCED gym class negate the premise that it's a good social vehicle for people who aren't interested in playing sports together?
obviously physical fitness is something to strive for, but it's not the purpose of college, it's the purpose of the gym. and as everyone intelligent in this post has noted, you don't have to play sports with others to be physically fit. as i said, i run four miles a day and do yoga and pilates, i'm obviously fit and I haven't had a required gym class since 8th grade. But then again, I went to a top private prep school, maybe that explains it, they let us be who we were instead of trying to force us into a mold of someone we weren't.

And as neverborn said, that's absurd to say that some people don't like learning. Some people go to good schools to get on the fast track for a high paying job. News flash: You aren't going to a school that can do that for you. I'm not sure then, what your goal is in attending college at all. I'm sure there are some nice sports leagues you could join without being in college.
I probably don't need to point out the absurdity of UIUC calling U Chicago and Harvard "morons"
And 311, college is about the life of the mind, not the life of the body. How you treat your body is not your college's responsibility and their goal is not to make sure that everyone has and follows the proper information about diet and exercise. That's each individuals own responsibility and it's not the purpose of college.

Shaganov: UIUC isn't a bad school, to be fair.

I personally am fat and out of shape. I plan to start changing this when I have access to a free gym next quarter. Even if I was thin, I would not enjoy sports, as they generally bore me to tears. I like watching baseball, but that's about it. I don't want to be forced to take P.E. classes, especially if they are populated by people like bearsfolife.

K, so the mind/brain is not part of the body? They're separate? give me your argument for that.... I argue that the brain is part of the body and vice-versa. You see they co-exist. Nevertheless, I can see how you are separating them, and your argument is valid as long as one can also argue that because they have read enough fiction novels that they don't need literature, and have written enough love notes that they don't need english, and have looked at enough plants, stars, animals, and bugs that they don't need biology/astronomy/physics/chemisty, etc. Oh, and forced art classes? Come on, just look at the cover of my notepad! So, if you really want to argue it... general education requirements are all BUNK, it's just a matter of perspective. Gym class, if taught properly and engaged, is also a learning experience that potentially broadens the mind/perspective of the pupils as any general education requirement claims to do.

The things that I will probably never have to do again in college (that i did in high school)

-catch a bus at 6:40 in the morning
-pack a lunch to eat at a designated time
-store books, calculators, etc in a locker in a random hallway
-use a hall pass to get out of class
-ask to use the bathroom
-vote for prom king and queen
-have a Sadie Hopkins dance
-get really pumped for homecoming
-use 10 year old computers in the library
-get detention
-turn in a doctor's excuse to a secretary when you get sick and miss school
-ask to see a nurse
-be locked in the same building for 7 hours
-have classes during periods
-get rental textbooks for free

Things that wont change from hs to college

-you have to study
-you sit in classrooms and learn stuff you'll never use
-scheduling is a pain (but college is more flexible)
-people can be dramatic
-cafeteria food still sucks but now you pay twice as much for it
-parking can be confusing/costly/limited on some campuses
-school internet is always quirky

New things I should expect for the first time in college

-a free or low cost gym
-longer walks on campus than in your hallways
-classes don't meet every day
-professors are usually very liberal
-material is much harder
-you need to keep yourself on top of things--no more notebook checks (for me this was a good thing since I always failed notebook checks yet got A's with my own strange organization system)

-get really pumped for homecoming
Colleges have homecoming to
-ask to see a nurse
If you live in a dorm, you're going to be seeing the nurses at your student health center a lot
-be locked in the same building for 7 hours
Sometimes you'll have to lock yourself in a building for 7 hours to finish a paper
-have classes during periods
They're not called that - but do you think you'll just be able to go to class whenever you want?
-get rental textbooks for free
It's called a library

-you need to keep yourself on top of things--no more notebook checks
Thank goodness, notebook checks had been killing me since elementary school

Colleges don't really have homecoming and no one cares.
I've never seen the nurse.

Realize that PE in high school is not at all like PE in college--in college you can take PE classes that fit your interests and fitness level, whether its weight training, lifting , cardio, dance ( all kinds, from ballroom to ballet to hiphop), yoga ,pilates, to sports , both traditional and not (like team handball, ultimate frisbee or innertube water polo).

The physical release from a PE class is a good thing--it helps you study! And scheduling it is a good thing because it is easy to get "too busy" to take care of yourself properly otherwise.

Depends on the college - here homecoming is one of the top three biggest weekends in the fall (along with parents weekend and christmas weekend)

Ok, lol, you people are gettin a little too PERSONAL and a little to SERIOUS.

I'm not a *ing frat guy, and I'm not a wannabee thug either. YOU DON'T *ING KNOW ME, SO DON'T JUDGE SOMEONE FROM BEHIND YOUR COMPUTER WHERE YOU CAN SAY WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT ABOUT ME.

It takes a real person to confront someone face to face. So you can hide behind your computers(neverborn and quirkily). I did say morons, BUT I NEVER REFERRED TO ANYONE SPECIFICALLY, LIKE YOU PEOPLE.

If I had the engineering/plumbing skills like my dad, who makes 70,000 a year and never attended college, then I wouldn't go to school.

But that's no an option, I have to go to college to find a career, find something that interests me. Sure, I'll learn about what interests me. THE OTHER STUFF THAT I'M NOT INTERESTED IN AND WILL NOT BE USING IN MY FUTURE, I HAVE NO WANT TO LEARN ABOUT.

THIS IS MY OPINION. SO DON'T START SAYING I'M WRONG. NOBODY'S WRONG HERE, OK.

You guys need to grow up, calling me a frat boy? Calling me a wannabee thug? I mean, do you guys have that low of self-esteem as to start making fun of someone behind your computer???

You showed your true nature.

Please remove your pinky from the shift key; it is feeling rather abused.

lol disneyguy.

in my experience, it is usually the people that say "sitting behind your computer" or "you nerds" that are the egotistical morons.

/shrug

Bearsfolife acted like a jackass, then got y when people called them on it. You are also *ing about us being "serious" and making fun of you when you in fact called us morons and ignorant. You are also ***ing at us for saying you were wrong, when on page 1 you said "wrong sports rule." Why is it that your opinion we can't criticize and say is wrong, but our opinions you are free to call us morons, ignorant, and say blatantly that we are "wrong?"

You also said that it is impossible that we go to school because we enjoy it and enjoy learning, and referred to it as "BS."

I do enjoy that you have the classic fallback on the Internet - make fun of the people making fun of you by calling them nerds and saying that they're always "sitting behind their computers." Follow that up with a macho posturing Internet tough guy move, which you executed admirably - saying how we aren't "real men" because we won't call you an idiot face to face.

I never got this "real man" thing. I'm not a real man because I'm not some brute who thinks that conflicts should be resolved through violence? I assume that's what you were implying, that if I were to say these things to your face, you'd probably hit me.

I showed my true nature? Yep. I did. I am someone who enjoys every aspect of intelligentsia, and loves learning. When attacked, I will defend myself. I generally have a low tolerance for people butchering the English language and those who posture online as an Internet tough guy. That is my nature.

Unfortunately, your nature was also exposed as one of hypocrisy. Gee, I hope that didn't violate one of your "This applies only to everyone but me" rules.

Internet tough guy lol?

Yea, that's me, mr. internet tough guy.

Wow, you need to go find some other things to do with your life besides analyzing me, and shall I say, analyzing me incorrectly.

All I have to work with is the posts YOU put forth. The problem isn't on my end. But continue with your classic troll behavior. This one is the "you need a life" gambit, saying that obviously if I had a life, I wouldn't be doing whatever activity online he doesn't like. However, it's hypocritical because the poster himself is also posting on this forum.

Wait, where did I say you didn't have a life? You seem to be putting words in my mouth.

I said, YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING ELSE WITH YOUR LIFE BESIDES ANALYZING ME INCORRECTLY.

That doesn't mean you don't have a life. Man o man.

And, you don't have to work with anything. I DON'T JUDGE YOU, SO GIVE ME THE SAME COURTESY.

Anyway, this fued's done with because it's not worth wasting time arguing with someone who I have no reason to argue with.

seriously, both of you shut up. I actually want to hear the original question answered

^^ you better turn your computer speakers WAAAAAY UP, and I'm betting you still won't hear the answer.

:)
