What are some big differences between the two? Also, which one is more 'worth it' for out of state students? I'm debating between these two and need to narrow it down to just 1 of these 2...

Both are very good schools. W&M is public, UR is private. W&M student body has higher test scores, admission rate is much lower, & is generally considered to be an intellectual environment, which is rare in the South.

Good luck.

Rare in the South? I will take that as a joke.

The South has some of the most prestigious universities in the nation. Tens of thousands of Northern students come south for college…for good reason. And its not sunshine.

They are both known for their intellectual enviroment, but URichmond is much smaller than William & Mary.

Yeah, I hope swish14 was just teasin’ …if not, he’s misinformed or just buys into a very inaccurate stereotype.

To the OP, UR and WM have quite a few similarities but do have a few differences:

*Size- WM is larger. UR around 2800 UG students, WM 5800.

*Public vs. Private-WM is a state school so you will have more Virginia residents. (Approx. 65% of this year’s entering freshmen were from the state of Virginia) UR is private and has always had drawn a lot of applicants from OOS, esp the Northeast. Swish is right, you most likely have a better chance of being admitted from OOS for Richmond.

*Campus- UR’s campus is located in a very pretty neighborhood in the West End of Richmond. WM is located in and around a very pretty and historical town of Williamsburg.

Which one is more “worth it?” UR is a very, very expensive school, but depending on your financial situation, they can be helpful in FA. WM not so much FA, but their cost is less due to the state school status. What is your intended major?

The architecture is different, if that matters (its one of the few things that hasn’t been said).

W&M is a colonial brick style whereas Richmond is a Collegiate Gothic (stone).

What is your intended major?

I’m studying accounting which is why I’m sort of wary of W&M. I THINK they make transfers apply to the business school after at least a semester post-transfer and I’m pretty sure it’s competitive since they admit very limited numbers into the program

W&M B-school has one of the best accounting programs in the nation, if I remember correctly. It’s competitive, but if you have an above average GPA (3.2+) is basically auto-admit.
