is it possible to use different "personal essays" for the schools i'm applying to on commonapp? for example, for my columbia app, i want to use an essay about my travels while for my brown app, i want to use an essay about my passion for writing... any input would be greatly appreciated!

Not in the normal course, unless of course you make alternate versions of the commonapp.I know it’s possible to have different commapp versions, but don’t really know how that works.

By creating different versions, you can edit anything, including the essays. However, this was not how they intended it to be used… you are supposed to use the same essay for all colleges. Your choice on what is the “right” decision.

thanks for the responses.

what is the intended purpose? is this frowned upon? i mean, i don’t see how it is unfair. the main reason i am doing this is because columbia does not have two long essays, only one for the common. however, brown has two long essays, one for the common and one for the supplement. simply put, i have two 500 word essays. i want to use to good one for columbia’s common and use the good one for brown’s supplement because it fits the prompt… i hope this makes sense.

^The ‘intended purpose’ was,as I understand it,to rectify any real errors on the original version(like wrong numbers/scores or any critical omissions).
Whether or not it is ‘frowned upon’ is an answer no one knows for sure.I guess in the end,it’s all about whether it’s worth taking the chance. And THAT part I really believe varies with individual situations.
So hope you are happy with whatever you choose to do.All the best.
