different version common app

When I go to do a different version common app for a different school, why does it say that the different version is only to make minor corrections and that we are not to change the essay? Are we not supposed to change an essay once submitted? I don't understand why not.

The Common App is supposed to be common. The ability to create alternate versions is provided to allow you to make the minor updates and corrections that the website describes. Alternate versions are not intended to be vehicles for submitting custom-tailored applications to different colleges.

but don’t many people do that anyway?

Yes, altering essays is very common. It’s been three years, but my D made alternate versions when necessary to change essays for different schools, no problem.

The Common in CA is intended for the user’s convenience, not to try to limit their options what they send when applying to schools.

I don’t have a kid applying this round, so some other people who are currently signed on to the CA need to give feedback on if the OPs problem, is anyone else unable to alter essays??

I have tried to creat a new version as the following massage getting from internet and it did not work:

Common Application Alternate Version TECHNOLOGY FAQ
The standard functionality of the Common Application allows an applicant to submit a singleapplication to many Common Application member institutions using one application.
In the event that an applicant chooses to provide slightly different information from institution to institution, she may do so by creating alternate versions of their application.
• When can an applicant begin creating alternate versions of his/her Common App?
The feature launches overnight Friday, October 19, and will be available this weekend
and throughout the reminder of the current admission cycle, which concludes in June.
• How can I create an alternate version of my application?
Step1: You must submit the Common Application to at least one institution. When
this is complete, you must logout of your account.
Step 2: You must then click on the following weblink:
http://app.cao.applyyourself.com/application/applicantlogin.aspx?allowcopy=true</a>
You will be presented with a login screen to the Common Application. You must
then enter your existing Username and Password and click Login.
Step 3: You will be presented with a screen titled ‘Application Versions’, where
you will see information about the application that you’ve already submitted. You
may then click on the ‘Replicate’ link to make an alternate version of your
submitted application. When this is complete, a second version will be visible on
this screen and a special drop down will appear in the upper right corner of the

Same in my case.

sorry, that link can not be used

I am trying to creat alternate versions as per Common App guidelines.

As some of you said the link did not work, is it an individual problem or system problem. I guess when Common App made it, it should work. e.g. for applicants to change the essays for different colleges.

It is kind of scary to start to make alternate versions when you are not sure if it will jeopardise the whole application.

Did any one successfully make alternate versions?

It worked for me but I made my alternate version a few weeks ago.

As entomom said, altering essays isn’t a big deal. I wrote my strongest essay as a response to a very specific supplement prompt for one school, and I am using it as my main Common App essay for the other schools. No problem.

pupu416, I was worried just like you. But see the instruction below. It worked for me today.

"You only need to go to the special URL the first time you create an alternative version. Thereafter, additional application versions can be made by going to the ‘Common Application’ section within your original Common Application and using the ‘Replicate’ link. You may make up to 10 versions, including the original version. You only need your original User Name and Password to access all versions.

When you create the first alternate version of your application you will see a simple confirmation message. If you create any additional alternate versions of your application you will need to complete two affirmation statements then click the ‘OK’ button. You may also click the ‘Cancel’ button to not create the new alternate version."

Also make sure you accept both the statements. Only then the 'OK" button works.

I really need to change an error within my common app but the link leads me to an http400 Bad Request page.
does anyone know of other links or other methods to circumvent this?

i can’t make the duplicate/
the link is throwing
“Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)”

anyways, i see the instruction to duplicate on,
https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/AlternateVersionTechnologyFAQ.pdf</a>
pretty simple really. i just hope they fix the link soon.

I remember opening up a support ticket because this wasnt working. This is what they gave me

" Make sure you have cookies enabled and your security settings are set to Medium or lower. "

After that it worked perfectly fine. Best of luck

actually, i was able to do it today.
i use firefox, and it told me that the security certificate has expired.
i manually added an exception, and now the site works fine.

i have firefox too. I am getting the same message saying Bad Request.
What exactly do i have to do to make the link work.

In my son’s case, he submitted an early action to a school. His school uses naviance. Counsellor’s rec and teachers recs are already uploaded and the early action school has even downloaded.

Now he has created another version to change one of the essays. The common app number remains the same. Does the school have to do anything from the naviance side?

Will all the recs uploaded thru naviance be available for these versions of commonapp also?

Thanks

RC

How do you fix the bad request error?

I also cannot access the link. It says bad request.

For those who said they manipulated something to make it work, what exactly did you do?

hi!

I’m a HS senior applying to colleges via the common app. I need to create an alternate version of my common app and I’ve followed the directions that the person above found, but I have one huge question…where is the “Replicate” button?? I’ve followed the special link and everything and followed everything that the directions said, but I cannot seem to find that button for the life of me, and it’s really stressing me out. Please help!!

I’m not sure about this, and I would need someone else to confirm, but I believe the Common App doesn’t let you create an alternate version until your first one has already been submitted.
