Dilemma of a prospective Intl' student

Hello.

I’m in a dilemma. I have been reading reviews from other websites about student life at Colorado and most of them gave a bad review because of the “partying” students have there. I’m not worried about that, but statements such as “If you don’t drink or do drugs, you will have a hard time fitting in the social life” made me worried because I am not into those stuff.

I fell in love with UC because honestly, of the views and it is in a suburban area. I come from a developing country so I am really used to seeing trees and short buildings, in addition to that, my country’s population is small. I don’t fancy urban areas, so out of all the unis I apply to, UC seem perfect, because from time to time, I would be reminded of home.

I’m Asian plus I consider myself socially awkward, been told by a lot of people I’m really naive [-( but I beg to disagree, HAHA. However, going abroad for uni life is one that I am looking forward to, because like most young people, I just want to get out from here and explore. I know that UC is not that “diverse” as it claims it, with 74% white people?

I think the root of my dilemma is I really want to go to UC but I fear that I may be bullied? Or outcast by them? Hmm…I don’t mind being alone if it comes to that but of course, I do hope to make friends in UC.

Advice, please?

xx

Im also an international student and Im in your same position! I really wanna go there but im just scared that i will not fit in since I don’t do drugs or any of that… what should we do??

Hey, I am a Senior at a Colorado Highschool, I have been accepted to CU Boulder. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. There are many different types of people that will be attending this school. You are bound to click with many people and have good friendships. I don’t think you have to worry.

As for Colorado… I hope you love snow and all four seasons it is an amazing state!

You will love Colorado and do not fall into any stereotypical assessments of the place. There are bad elements, agreed, but you will not be forced to a lifestyle that you don’t agree with.

As a Colorado parent, I think you do not need to worry about CU Boulder’s lifestyle. There are plenty of serious students in all the colleges (music, engineering, arts and sciences, Education, business). . There are even living groups like Andrews Hall for Engineers and other types of serious dorms. Attempt to get into one of the “serious student dorms” but if for some reason you do not, don’t worry, you will still find friends at CU. The parties are serious in Boulder, too, but you can simply skip those! Greek life (fraternities and sororities) can also be skipped, if you don’t like wild parties. Some fraternities are service oriented and you can join that type if you want. American football is a big deal in Boulder, with quite a few parades and parties. You might find it fun to see the buffalo on the field during American football. I hope you choose Boulder!

@Coloradomama do you happen to know of any technical clubs for mechanical present in CU boulder?

Truescope, yes they have ASME. This is a professional organization with specific student club at CU Boulder. There may be other smaller organizations by interest as well , http://www.me.colorado.edu/#!student-groups/c6vk
