I find myself in a bit of confusion on when to buy. I know there have been threads on this in the past (and I've read most of them), but my situation is a bit specific. You see, I am lucky enough (or unlucky enough, depending on your viewpoint) to be heading to college around Sept. 20th instead of the August start that most colleges have. What this means (or so I've heard), is that the new MBP or at least MB will come out before then.

So my question is, should I wait or buy now? A reason to wait is of course having "better" technology, a reason not to wait is that it would be better to have some time to get to know my mac (since this will be my first). Honestly, the current MBP is beautiful so I'm sure I'll be happy with it or whatever apple dreams up next, it's just I cannot decide! I want one now, but at the same time, I will wait if there are big improvements! ARGH!

**Also, one reason I still might not even buy a mac is I have no knowledge of mac software for taking notes in class like Microsoft OneNote (why oh why doesnt 2008 have this??). SO yeah, lmk on any programs for mac that exist.

**Lastly, and as usual, sorry for the long post, but I was curious whether it;'s better to buy in the store or online? can you customize Hardrives or anything at the store?

i'm actually wondering the same thing (i'm in a very similar position), so i'm interested to see what people recommend.

i do know, however, that buying in the store is nice because you can bring in your old laptop and they'll transfer all your files for you in like 2 days if you want. aside from that, i'm pretty sure all the customization is the same, unless they don't have a particular something in the store.

Chances are that by the time the new Macbooks come out, the promo where you get a free iPod Touch will end, so keep that in mind as well. If the free Touch isn't on the top of your priorities list, I'd wait. Macs are incredibly easy to learn (it took me about two days to figure out 85% of the OS) and supposedly this new batch of the Macbooks will have a substantial update.

Oh and you can buy either way, but I think if you want to customize it's online only. Online shipping is incredibly fast though, I ordered Thursday afternoon and got it Saturday morning. However, I didn't customize mine.

I'd probably wait. The new updates seem very cool. Its not difficult to get used to Macs. I got my first one before I went to college, and in a few hours of fooling around I was fine. They're made to be very user-friendly and hence easy to use. In a week I knew a couple more tricks and my way around a lot better.

listen, in the world of computers, something new will always be around the corner. I've seen so many people wait and wait for this and that to come out; then when it's released they hear of another revision, so they wait more. The cycle continues and continues. Just get it now and be happy. You can't keep up with technology :]

and to the last guy, I totally know what you mean, but all the same I need a computer for college by sept 20th about so I'm limited to either what they have now or what might be next, no more waiting after that for me! So yeah, just definitely won't keep waiting after the next one...question is, should I go for this one or wait til possibly the minute before I go to school to get the latest? It's still got me beat...

i would wait. you'll be getting better hardware for the same price. if you've got any friends with macs, just ask them if you can play around with it sometime. however, there will probably be high demand for macs then. there's more than a few schools on the quarter system, and students aren't the only people who buy macs.

my college begins on the second week of september, yet i'll wait for the new macbook. the price will remain the same -if not lower- and the increase in the specs will be huge depending on what i read and expect. of course technology will always change, but won't it be annoying to buy a new laptop only to find that it won't be produced anymore in the same model two weeks later?
but of course, if you really, really want an ipod touch-which will be renewed soon as well-, then buy a macbook.

I have to agree with echoes600. sure, technology is constantly changing, but do you want to buy a laptop that is probably going to be updated in just a few weeks?
