Dilemma

I was in Spanish 3 during my first nine-weeks last year. I switched out of it to be in AP Physics. I am looking at top schools that highly recommend 3-4 years of Spanish. All we did in that class was sit around and do nothing. It was a waste of time. I ended up doing well in my Physics class. Did I make a mistake? Is it going to hurt me that I only have 2 years of a language or will colleges understand that it was a waste of time to stay in Spanish? Thanks for any input.

Nobody?

Are you a junior or senior?
What are you planning to major in in college?

(I’m guessing he’s/she’s a senior given his/her username.)

I’m the opposite, I gave up AP Biology to take Spanish III since I already had 3 years of science, but now I regret it because I’m thinking that I might want to declare a major in neurology. I always hear about ‘do what makes you happy and not what colleges want’, and I wish I’d followed that advice.
It does depend on the major and on the college, though.

take it at a community college

Take AP Physics if you are learning toward a Math or Science-based major. Take Spanish III if you are learning toward an English, Social Studies or Business-based major. Or, to increase your options, take Spanish III at a community college while you take AP Physics at school - win-win situation?

I applying as a science related major. I can’t really take Spanish at another school because I am already duel enrolling at a major university for another class. Scheduling would be a major issue. The one thing I am worried about is the fact that I will have had 8 sciences by the time I graduate. I may be able to do an independent study, but I don’t know how I could get it on my transcripts so colleges will not think I am lying if I say that I am doing an independent study.

Which science classes have you taken so far?
What science major are you planning to pursue? Bio? Chem? Physics?

If you’re not pursuing Physics then I think you would be better off taking Spanish III.

Bio-2
Chem-4
Physics-2 (Physics may drop to one. I was trying to take another physics class this year, but may not be allowed to.)
I personally feel that Physics is a priority. Spanish program at my school is horrible and I want to learn two different languages in college.

Well you’re not majoring in Physics so it actually is not a priority. Just bear the Spanish III class; the Spanish at my school is horrible too but I’m forcing myself to go up to AP Spanish Language. If you plan to learn two different language in college, then it would be best to take Spanish III in your last year to keep the mindset of learning a foreign language in your head rather than cut it off.

We just gotta deal with what we have.

I ask: Would not taking a third year of Spanish be the thing that gets you rejected from a school?

bump…?

You need three years of foreign language.

Why do I NEED three years?

You just do.

E.G.

UC A-G Requirements

Foreign Language
2 years needed, 3 years recommended

They say it’s recommended, but it’s really needed. Everyone knows that doing the minimum won’t work.
