Dining options?

What's the difference between Bartlett and Cathey? I'm currently deciding between Max P and South, and I would like to take into account the difference between the two dining halls (since I tend to eat quite a lot and quite often :P and don't worry, I work out a lot as well to burn it off).

I know that all first-year's get the unlimited meal plan, what does that mean? I know Cathey is all-you-can-eat, but does Bartlett have that as well? How would the unlimited meal plan, which includes unlimited "swipes", work with a dining hall that doesn't have all you can't eat? I'm just a little confused....

Also, I've already submitted my deposit, but does anyone know when we have to submit the housing forms by?

Thanks.

Both Bartlett and South are all-you-can-eat (or all-you-care-to-eat, rather). Other than decor, the two dining halls are run essentially in the same way: same stations, same food, etc.

The housing forms are due by June 1st.

All of the dining halls are all-you-can-eat. I’ve generally enjoyed my experience at Bartlett --the food is pretty decent (nice variety, ethnic options, etc), the table orientations are convenient, and its location is right by the Reg. The only thing is that the staff is always annoyed… Pierce definitely has the friendliest staff (alas!).

South is okay if you like your food with a sprinkle of mouse feces (it has already failed two health inspection tests this year and has a lower food safety rating than the famous Harold’s Chicken). On the plus side the university gave South users extra maroon dollars as compensation because of this so they could buy ridiculously overpriced junk food from Bart Mart instead.

@haroldschicken: is that true about south?? That’s awful, I was hoping to list south as my first choice.

Can confirm that dinner comes with a nice side of mouse droppings. yum

thanks for all the advice guys!

Just one more question though, as I’m now almost certain to put Max P down as my first choice: I know Max P has private bathrooms and you have to clean them yourselves (eww…), and so I was wondering, in the event of an emergency (when the bathroom is inaccessible, for whatever reason lol…), is it possible to go to, say, South to do my business (including shower)?

And I heard that Max P in general is not very clean (I thought it’s constructed in the 2000’s?) and well lit…to what extent is that true? is it really gloomy in there?..

and I suppose that there are no shared bathrooms in Max P whatsoever?

You can eat at Bartlett even if South is your official dining hall, I know people whose dining hall tables are at South yet they prefer to eat at Bartlett because it’s located closer to their classrooms and the Reg. Considering that you plan to work out a lot, then you’d prob eat at Bartlett a lot more considering that it’s much closer to Ratner than South is. As for the bathroom emergency situation…um, South is probably too far to seek a bathroom, you’re better off simply asking a friend in your House or dorm to let you use their bathroom XD. I’ve only been to one part of Max P twice, so I’m def no expert, but it didn’t seem gloomy to me at all.

Actually it’s worse --South apparently failed 3 inspections this year, making it 4 fails out of 9 inspections total. And it looks like I have to take back what I said about Bartlett because it just failed a health inspection as well --mouse feces there also.

Everyone should sign this petition [Petition Dining Reform at UChicago](Petition Dining Reform at UChicago). This situation is completely ridiculous. UChicago is basically mandating that everyone who lives in housing pay almost $600 per month to eat poorly cooked food that is stored at inappropriate temperatures, pooped on by rodents, and then served to students on plates with disgusting chunks of food from previous meals still stuck to them.
