Dining Plans

So can anyone tell me any reason for these rates:

Plans And Rates - University of Chicago Housing & Dining Services

Every Bartlett Dining Point is worth $1 and every Flex Dollar is also worth $1.

So, for example, if we take the Minimum Bartlett Plan, we will be getting $251 + $167 = $418 worth of food per quarter and $418*3 = $1254 worth of food per year. But the price for the minimum bartlett plan is $2289, which means that we lose $1000 for... what appears to be absolutely nothing at all. Am I missing something or is this a scam? It's even worse for freshmen, and you'll be losing something like $1800 with the Bartlett Freshman Plan.

My friend says that it's obvious that we're getting ripped off and that pretty much everyone already knows about it, but why don't they just tack this onto our tuition instead of adding on hidden, required fees for food? :/;;;;

Would it be bad to room in Max P and then get the "traditional freshman meal plan?" then eat at other dining halls?

Oh, I'm not saying that the Bartlett plans are the worst. They're just the easiest for comparison since 1 Bartlett Dining Point = $1. Pierce Meals are somewhere around $10 (which is ridiculous as it is!), but I don't know the exact pricing, so I didn't want to analyze it. All plans are most likely equally rip-offs.

ouch ouch ouch, and I thought flex was sort of monopoly money.... justified those $7 Lucky Charms at Bart Mart.

I encourage you to pursue this issue further on a bureaucratic front, but keep in mind that you're not going to get that far. The owner of Aramark is a GSB alum, and he just gave a #(*)$@& of money to the school, so I'd be surprised if there were any changes made to service/pricing.

You're not alone on this one:
Chicago Maroon | An unappetizing impropriety?

How much do most students spend per meal at Bartlett?

Probably around seven dollars on average.

For most people 900 points is enough for the quarter, and if it isn't other people who eat less will generally pay for you, so it is effectively all-you-can-eat within reason.

Because of this, the better food at Bartlett and the perk of house tables, there is no reason to get a plan elsewhere.

By the way, that extra $1000 of your meal plan is poorly labeled, but not actually an outright Aramark (dining services) scam. It is going to quasi-housing services like IT, dining hall facilities, and programming.
