I'm applying to Tulane and listing my intended major as Finance. Will I get directly into their business school? Or do I apply to the business school during my freshman year? Thanks.

@Bermise

Technically, neither, although the former is closer to being accurate. Tulane is structured differently than many other schools, and personally I think it is one of the things that differentiates Tulane in a very positive way.

You don’t apply to an individual school when you apply to Tulane, you apply to Newcomb-Tulane College. Therefore if/when you are admitted to Tulane you get admitted to Newcomb-Tulane College. This College is the umbrella for the 5 undergraduate schools: Architecture, Liberal Arts, Science & Engineering, Public Health/Tropical Medicine, and of course the Freeman School of Business. So you are free to choose any of Tulane’s 80+ majors within any of these schools once you are admitted as an undergraduate. It is also part of what makes it so easy to double (or even triple) major at Tulane, and to change majors if that becomes the path you want.

So there is really nothing else you need to do. Should you get into and decide to attend Tulane, you would simply say you are intending to major in business/finance and you will be assigned an advisor for that area. You don’t have to actually make it an official declaration of a major, just that it is your initial intention. They will steer you to the right courses, including the business TIDES course. TIDES courses are special introductory courses all freshmen take their first semester. The business school has their own special set they require prospective business majors to take. Anyway, the point is that all you have to do is get into Tulane and the rest is easy, at least as far as picking business as your major.

HI Fallen, I haven’t posted here in a while, since all of your info is always spot on, but I do want to clarify one thing from your last post. The only school that you need to “apply” to is the Architecture School. They require a portfolio (don’t know the specifics). Here is the info from the web site:

All undergraduate admissions to Tulane are managed by the University’s Office of Admission. In addition to the undergraduate admissions application requirements, the School of Architecture requires a digitally submitted portfolio for review by School of Architecture faculty. The School works closely with the Admissions Office to select the most promising candidates from those accepted to Tulane.

For the business school, as FC said, there is no separate application or criteria, just be advised that if you plan to be a business major, you must take either the Business TIDES class or the Law TIDES class your freshman year, and this course is for two semesters instead of the regular TIDES classes which are only one semester. So if you are considering a major in business, make sure that you sign up for one of those two.

My son (the former CC TulaneFreshman) is now a sophomore in the Business School and is doing well. He has become active in the Business Fraternity as well. I haven’t been on these boards in a while but still check in on occasion. To those of you still waiting to hear back, hang in there…it’s worth the wait!

Thanks for that catch, @jozuko. Two years ago the Architecture school required a portfolio for the first time (in recent years, at least). Then last year they dropped the requirement again, now it appears they have reinstated it. I guess they are still trying to decide which works best for them. It didn’t even occur to me to see if they had added it back.

Thanks so much @fallenchemist !

Also many of the Business Tides (as well as regular Tides) have a service learning component so your freshman service learning requirement is met. My son is not in the business school, he is pre-law but he took the Law Tides under the Business Dept and is encouraged to take the second part next semester…
