ok..well i'm confused with all the college of arts & science, college of business, college of engineering...can undergraduate freshmen students get direct admit? if so, what's the purpose of general education courses that freshmen take? also, if you apply, do you choose which college you want to study in or does the university decide for you according to your stats?

please help me understand all these..thanks in advance!

i mean..when you apply to, let's say, UIUC, there are many colleges like LAC, Business, Engineering, etc. So do you have to choose one and tell them where you want to go? or will UIUC choose for you? Also what happens if a person has an undeclared major?

yea..i'm really confused right now so please clear this confusion! thanks

You select the school within the university that you want to attend, and apply there. If you're undecided, apply to the College of Arts & Sciences.

so you do choose whch school you want to attend within the university, right?
also in the college of arts & sciences, do you learn variety of subjects? or can you choose which courses you want to take?

Not sure how it works at the universities you're looking at, but at many places, certain colleges within a university are more competitive than others. Engineering and business are ones that not everybody who applies gets into, whereas Arts and Sciences, anybody who applies for gets into. If you apply for engineering, for example, and are denied, you may still be accepted into the college of arts and sciences. It's usually also possible to switch to another college (ie from engineering to arts and sciences, or arts and sciences to business) within the university once you are accepted and start attending.

Arts and Sciences, at most schools, has a core curriculum with certain general ed. classes you have to take (though that might be true of engineering/business as well). Besides those gen eds, you also have to take classes to fulfill your major requirements (eg biology, philosophy, english, physics, etc). Beyond those requirements, you're free to take what you want. Engineering often has a lot of strict requirements, so you'd have less room to take whatever you want.

thanks GoldShadow, but one thing i would like to know for sure. if i do get denied to college of engineering, will the university put me in the college of arts and sciences for sure?

The answer to that might be different depending on the college RealM, you should try to look it up on their website(s). Or you could call the admissions department.

Unless the university you're looking at has a 100% admit rate, the answer is no. There's no "for sure" about it; they may reject you from all schools.

Most universities will not move your application from one school to another. If you're rejected from engineering, they won't then turn around and consider you for arts & sciences. That generally happens only if you're rejected from a particular major within a school (*i.e.*the university does not have a school of engineering; it's all within arts & sciences. In that case, the university may accept you but deny you entrance into the engineering major. Or, of course, they may reject you outright.)
