Directed Studies Letter

I just received a letter today inviting me to enroll in the Directed Studies program next year. Did anyone else get a letter? Any input on the program and if it's worth enrolling?

Me too!
I am definitely doing it, and was planning to even before I got the letter. Small seminars on the core works of the Western tradition with some of Yale’s greatest professors? I dare someone to try to keep me away.

I got one too! DS seems amazing to say the least… it’s intense but it seems like the school thinks you’re a really great fit for the program. Check it out, come to Bulldog Days, and pat yourself on the back! It seems like there was a very small amount of letters that went out.

I just got back from staying at Yale, and I heard that when you look back at the program when you’re older it’s a great experience but while you’re at Yale you’ll feel miserable

Yay! I’m really excited I got one! But aside from briefly (really briefly) mentioning it in my application, I’m not sure why I was selected, since I don’t have much background in philosophy or classics. Does anyone know if it’s manageable to do DS w/o prior experience in such areas?

i got a letter as well, which is odd because i also didn’t mention DS specifically in my application…this is really a tough decision for me. i love all three seminar topics (History, Lit, Philosophy), but to be quite perfectly honest, i’ve been working my ass of in a county magnet program for the past three years and was looking forward to a better work/life balance at yale. i mean, the letter says that DS students will be able to experience “the full range of extracurricular activities and social offerings”, but is this really true? Ninety plus pages of writing per term seems a bit harsh

Jenny717: I don’t have much experience with the classics either, but I think the idea is that after DS, you WILL have experience with the classics. Talk the DS people at the Bulldog Days academic fair and they’ll probably give you a better idea of whether or not the program is right for you–but then, the fact that you got a letter leads me to believe that SOMEONE thinks you can handle it.
