disappointed in my ACT score I don't know how to improve.

I got a 23 on my ACT. I got a 20 on the math which was the worst score. My best was science which was a 25. I have straight As and always do good on tests. I used the princeton book as prep and it was garbage. Their questions were way easier and all I understood from that book is to use POE.I know I'm capable of a 27-29.I obviously would like to score around 30 but i know i cant. Lol. Im planning to retake it soon but can anyone please give me tips on what you did to do good?

Practice with the red book?

Hey ChicagoBulls1, did you know that you can actually score pretty decently on the math without doing a bunch of the questions? To give you some perspective, to get a 20-21 on the math, you only need to get roughly 30 out of the 60 questions correct. That’s with leaving the entire other 30 questions BLANK (which you should never do because you should always randomly guess on the ACT if you don’t know the answer). But let’s say you did leave them blank…if you got 30 other questions correct, you will get what you have now.

Now, the math goes from easy to hard, so just focus on getting the first 30 questions correct 100%. Those are the low-hanging fruit. Then go on to maybe around question 45 or so, but just wildly guess on the last 15 questions. Don’t even read those questions - they will be too difficult or a waste of your time that you could be spending making sure you get an easier question correct. Remember, all questions are worth the same amount of points, so don’t scramble for hard questions until you are getting all the easy questions.

I’m curious though, what have you tried? What is your biggest frustration with this test? Doesn’t have to be just about math…but any section. What’s the biggest thing that stresses you out or is an obstacle for you? And what do you hope to achieve?

I tried using the Princeton book and it made it all look so easy but it really didn’t help at all. I also feel like I overfocus on the time and rush because I usually finish with 10 min left. I don’t understand how people do so good on it. Ive always had great grades so I know I can do good. I just want to achieve a high score .

Yeah, the Princeton book isn’t very useful. People focus on timing so much because it is a fast-paced test, but if you have 10 min left over, that’s a bad sign. It means you’re rushing too much. Focus on slowing down and being more accurate. You don’t have to finish the test. Best way to improve at your level is to be more accurate even if you don’t get to several questions.

I feel you though. Not understanding how others can do so well on this test when you’re doing well in school yourself can be frustrating. Like others have some secret you don’t know about or just pure luck. Truth is there is no secret, but it’s more than just hard work too. Success requires knowing where to put your effort, how to leverage the sharp edge of the knife. It seems like you know you can do better, but you just don’t know what specific steps to take, right? Like you know it’s in you to pull out a monster score, but need guidance on how to get there.

Tell me this though…what’s a high score mean to you? Besides the obvious, why do you want a high score?

Thanks for understanding. my goal is to get some kind of scholarship. The college I’m planning to go to isnt competive so 23 should be ok but I like the area and its a commute school so I don’t waste more money on dorms.
