The application really didn't give you a chance to describe yourself, the kind of roomate you would like, nor the kind of roomate you would dislike. I was pretty disappointed by that. I understand that its best to room with someone new (which is why I'm not rooming with any of the many people going to michigan from my school) but I would have liked it if, as I have seen at other colleges, I had a bit more options to choose from. Nothing major as far as options, but everyone has their own pet peeves, and I would have liked a chance to describe the kind of person I was not interested in rooming with. Do they send a followup application or something? Was anyone else as disappointed as I was?

I wasn't....I like the suspense. 99% of roomates work out just fine.....besides, college is a time for you to step out of your comfort zone...so have fun with iT!!!!

I understand that most of the time the roomate will work out fine but to tell me that I can't at least have a preference on the type of person I wouldn't like to be with is a bit ridiculous. I mean even the most impersonal applications ask you if you stay up late or play music loud. Neither of those are of any concern to me, I'm just trying to make a point. I thought Michigan severely limited its options on the application.

i totally agree with you--though rooming with someone new may be an interesting learning experience, i don't believe that my ability to live with random people is a skill that i'll need after college--that's why i like the questionnaire matching system that numerous other schools use. i'm worried about having a roommate that's my complete opposite, and quite unfortunately there's no followup app.

Don't worry about it...if you wind up with someone that you don't click with there is always the room swap and waitlists to switch rooms. I did it and got a single.....It is doable. Make the best of whatever you get though don't run away unless you absolutely can't live in that room. For instance like my roommate, a kleptomanic, anorexia.

a klepto anorexic sounds like a tale... shudder

hahah it was......i have soooo many stories.,.....she started out normal

From what I understand - schools that use the detailed profile and schools that don't have about the same roommate matching success rates. I mean...who is going to say, "I'm an anorexic kleptomaniac," on their application.

I agree with Galeforce. Michigan's dorm experience is, as I always like to put it, non-descript. It is neither good nor bad. The dorms are adequate, the rooms are ok and the food is edible. Michigan is starting to re-design its dorms...but infortunately, it will take 3 or 4 years before that is done. However, rest assured that most other universities do not have a much better dorm arrangement.

The only dorms that really impressed me were those at GWU... converted hotels, marble lobbys, and maid service for freshman. It was pretty crazy. I stayed in Michigan one summer for some summer study program in Alice Lloyd Hall. I wasn't very impressed with the actual dorm but Ann Arbor is an awesome town.
