So I took the SAT in march without studying and scored a 1700 (550 CR, 560 WR, 590 M) and then a few months later after actual preparation I took it again in June...However, this time I actually scored less, a 1660 (560 CR, 520 WR, 580 M). I was really disappointed with this score report. I plan on taking the SAT again this October for the 3rd and final time, but this time studying even harder. The two main schools i'm looking to get into are UCLA and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. However, I fall within the bottom 25% for SAT scores which is kind of discouraging but I am hoping for the best. Besides my SAT scores I have not gotten one B yet in highschool. 4.0 Freshman year, 4.0 Sophomore year, 4.5 Junior year, and hopefully a 4.8 this upcoming Senior Year. I'm taking all the AP classes available to me and working on community service as well. I have 4 years of varsity football, 2 years of track and field, I'm the President of FBLA, Vice-Pres of Link Crew and also involved in another club called CSF. I also attended the 77th Session of California Boys State this past week if that helps. JUST TELL ME IM MORE THAN A TEST SCORE :(

I am sure you will do great the third time!! You have great EC’s and a stellar GPA. @Jakereally

For sure, test scores do not define a person. Your GPA and EC are great- but to an admissions officer it might make them question whether or not your school is “easy” as the standardized tests are a key way in comparing you across a (for lack of a better word) standard. But don’t be discouraged- with a bit more studying you’ll do fine. And even if you don’t- whatever. It’s one test. Not the end of the world.

UCs do emphasize HS grades more than test scores, although your test scores are on the low side for UCLA and CPSLO.

You may also want to try the ACT, since some students do better on the ACT than the SAT.

Definitely try the ACT…might be a much better fit for you
