The CWRU NPC gives a award of 49k, actual award was 21k. Not sure why this huge difference, but it is looking more the norm. Overstating the NPC award sure lures in extra applicants !
I’d say it is false advertising. Shame on them! Our NPC estimate was just as high, too, but the actual award was about half that. Contacted the school, but to no avail. Very disappointed. We are rushing to apply to regular decision schools before New Year.

Yes but to what end? CWRU does not charge an application fee ! I guess it is to pad the stats on number of applications. I am sure that is a factor in college ranking. But that would be offset by low yield ( enrolled vs admitted ) so again I am not so sure what purpose this false advertising serves.
Absolutely commiserate on your predicament. Thankfully, my son applied to a bunch of public schools back in October where the aid data is much more transparent and we have a far better handle on what the OOP will be. I would advise people to avoid these private schools which are not 100% needs met unless they have a lot of money. Public schools provide comparable education at far less cost and does not burden the graduate with a ton of debt.
Case sent a 2nd letter offering 18k CWRU grant in addition to the 20.5k scholarship and a total package of 54,830.
So the NPC OOP was about 9K off base ( comes to about 12k while it was 3k in the NPC ).
Congratulations, sidatom. Nice to know CWRU tried to honor the NPC. It is a great school.
Yes and I wish I could delete this thread ! The package details are -
University Scholarship $20,500
CWRU Grant $18,610
Federal Pell Grant $5,920
Federal SEOG (Grant) $1,800
Fed Work-Study Program $2,500
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan $2,000
Federal Direct Subsidized Loan $3,500
I know!
That is a very generous package, and I am your son deserves it.
Again, congratulations!
Thank you.
Net Price Calculators are off by as much as 50% at all schools not just CWRU because they are not detailed enough about savings assets, debt etc. Two of our children good merit package at CWRU. One kid won the Michelson Morley award with is worth $28,000 to $30,000 per year! All merit. Its an amazing award. The University Scholarship varies from $19,000 a year up to $28,000 or more per year, its NOT a set amount. I think factors like SAT Subject exam scores, athletic ability, GPA, and ECs affect the amount of merit that can be awarded at CWRU.
Public schools of the same caliber as CWRU OFTEN do not offer merit though and often do not offer good financial aid, in our experience, but we are a western family with in state choices that have limited money for financial aid. I think CWRU is top for merit plus financial aid of any school in the country. (except top aid schools like Vanderbilt, MIT, Harvard, Princeton which give families making $150,000 annual income AID! Those schools do not count house equity against the aid package as much as CWRU does). Still CWRU is very very high amount of aid compared to public options our sons got into (Georgia Tech and U of Colorado and Colorado School of Mines).
@Coloradomama Timely post, perhaps you can answer a question for me. DS was just accepted with the Michelson-Morley scholarship .
We haven’t had a chance yet to research or call, but does that scholarship have any requirements beyond satisfactory academic progress? …:i.e., does it require the student to stay a STEM major or to stay in a specific major or school?
@CGHTeach First Congratulations! CWRU is amazing. Sorry I do not know the answer. to your question. My younger child is at Georgia Tech much to my dismay, he did not accept the Michelson Morley last year. He wanted to forge his own direction and not follow older sibling. It was a very hard decision for him as he liked what he saw at Case too. With one kid at each of these schools, I can say that CWRU has very tough academics just like Georgia Tech does. But not so bad that your child will flounder, if he won that particular award, and lots of great under grad research, healthy social life, and time with professors. I know the CWRU University Scholarship has a pretty low GPA threshold to lose it and no major requirement. Case offers a CIT alumni scholarship, that does require a math/science/engineering major I think?? that your child should apply for as it cover the modest tuition increases at CWRU. He/She can apply in the sophomore year, as I remember. PM if you have detailed questions. I have blogged on campus safety, academics, ECs and social life at Case over the last four years. I have a senior at Case.
