So I'm thinking of taking it next Fall online at MiraCosta. There is no mandatory on-campus meeting as far as I know. But I just wonder if anyone has taken this class (or a similar one at MiraCosta) before and how do you feel about this? Math + Online = Scary I know, but my college offers it at the same time as the lecture session of physics: mechanics so I can't take it there.

The instructor looks a bit scary (pic): ZikaPerovic - MiraCosta College (all) - RateMyProfessors.com, but the review looks positive and I love challenging prof like this. ALso I wonder how hard is discrete math compared to Calculus? I got A,B, and A in the three semesters of Calc respectively. And we will be using Discrete Math with Applications by Susanna Epp in this online class. Any recommendation/advice on this issue is highly appreciated. Thank you guys.

You have to take tests and the final online.

Online 2371 ONL PEROVIC Z 3.0 ONLINE
Tests and the Final Exam must be taken on campus. Dates and
more information will be provided after the semester begins. After
enrolling, go to blackboard.miracosta.edu, log in using your Surf
ID and Password, and click on the link to this course to access
the syllabus and more information about this class. Reading and
homework assignments will be posted on Blackboard, and students
may also attend the classroom lecture section on campus.

Just an FYI.
If they offer this class in the Spring, I’d totally take it. The textbook is pretty good.

Discrete math is not difficult, it’s actually really fun. You set up proofs and there’s a lot of set notation, etc…

I think you meant on campus lol.
Actually, I contacted the instructor already and he said that it is possible to take everything entirely online, including tests. However, tests and final must be proctored by a counselor/librarian and have his/her signature signed on the test. It’s a little bit complicated, but I don’t want to wait till’ Spring since frequently, Discrete Math is offered at the same time with physics at my CC lol.

But thanks for the info btw . I am still deciding if it’s worth taking this risk hmmmm…

I’ve never taken an online math course but I do know that Discrete is offered at CC’s online like Stats, Finite, etc. You can definitely do Discrete without any higher level math and don’t need Calculus, depending on the school and prof. I have never taken it (but will take it just to have it in my arsenal) and from what my profs and friends have told me, all you really need is just a solid foundation in algebra and the ability to grasp the notation, some of which you have no doubt likely seen already. Having three semesters of Calc definitely matured you for the class, especially depending on how proof heavy your prof is.

As a matter of fact, the CC I attended before transferring uses Epp’s book too and only has pre-calc (Math 001) as an advisory for the the class …

Thank you very much for your kind words statmanaggie. I will take your advice into consideration. I have never taken an online math class before so I feel a lil bit worried after all… But thank you once again bro.

From what I know, there are two CCs that offer discrete math online. One is obviously MiraCosta, the other is DVC in its summer session (right now). I wonder if anyone here has taken or is taking it and how do you feel about the course?

The thing I would be concerned about is the material. It’s more logical and theoretical than say, elementary stats, where you’re just reading and plugging in numbers to a fancy looking formula. Be sure to email him with any questions you have and also attend the on campus lectures when you can.

But I looked at his reviews and students seem to like him. He looks hella crazy but appears to be one of those whom you think is the worst but is actually hella good lol.

Haha thanks man he seems to be like my current teacher in Calc 3, crazy test, but super helpful. I cannot attend the on-campus lecture since I live in the Bay Area =), so I guess I’ll give it a try for the first 2 weeks, and if things do not work out well, I’ll just drop for no grade of record + money back xD

Er, yeah - I meant on campus. But I guess you have that figured out then!

As for the taking it in the spring thing, I just meant for myself (me personally) - I would take it in the spring cause my fall schedule is super full. As in, I want to take that online course but I can’t! Let me know how it is - if they offer it in spring, and you liked the experience, I’ll probably take it.

They only offer it in the fall Linear algebra is offered online in the spring, sometimes even DE is offered in the spring too, but very unlikely.
(I didn’t believe my eyes when I saw that too. How could math even be taught online lol)

Anyway, I guess it is worth a try after all… thanks guys

Linear Algebra online!? Oh man, I was taking that class a few semesters ago on campus but had to drop later on due to other classes, working, etc. I can’t even imagine that class being online since there are way too many proofs, theorems, and axioms to be taught and understood unless the course was geared toward applied topics. Having homework based online with MyMathlab, Webassign, etc is one thing, but actual instruction for a class like that is another.

But apparently it’s being done obviously, and more power to the people who can handle it lol. I would go crazy lol. I’m a Stats major and wouldn’t even take elementary stats online.

Yeah, as I said I don’t believe my eyes either. But since I knew that even Calc 3 can be offered online (thanks to killmyentourage xD) at Coastline and CoroCoso (or whatever name that school is), I’ve searched google like crazy and found out that even Linear Algebra, DE and Discrete are offered online too lol

But of course I’m not crazy enough to take all those classes online, in fact, I’m going to take LA next semester on campus @ my CC and Discrete online, and my last semester will leave me with only DE :D. Really hope that the discrete math online is not SOOOOO hard… I’m going to apply to MiraCosta right nowwwwwww.

Men, that’s tough O_o. Even in normal semester at my CC where LA is taught in 16 wks and DE 16 wks as separate class, it is still hard for me to grasp the concept. Good luck kmt :D
