How long do most science discussion classes usually take up? Is attendance optional or mandatory?

Info on math discussion classes would also be appreciated.

"Info on math discussion classes would also be appreciated. "

never showed up for any single class for calc 2-4 except when I need to turn in my homework (team or individual). Even when I do, I leave after I turn in the stuff. Attendance doesnt really matter, and you can basically self learn everything and get A.

Very nice to know. I was getting antsy about my 8AM math 215 discussion.

What about chem and bio?

While some people might be able to learn everything on their own, I find some discussions to be rather useful. Orgo discussion, for instance, I thought helped quite a bit as far as answering the questions I had. Ditto for chem 130.

Calc 3 and 4 both have labs, so you have to stay for those. As far as those discussions, I like to get the extra practice (this was more true for 4 than 3…in 3 if you’re lost I would recommend office hrs).

Bio 162 (now split into 171, 172, 173), when I took it, the discussion was not useful, but that was because my GSI was awful. I only went when we had quizzes. I think that for most classes where discussion isn’t mandatory (almost all discussions), whether or not you go will depend largely on your gsi.

“Calc 3 and 4 both have labs, so you have to stay for those”

You dont HAVE TO go to calc 3 labs. There’s nothing that counts gradewise there. At least it’s true when I took it.

I took math 214 for Calc 4 instead of 216. So maybe that’s different. but 214 was just a big lecture.

We had to type up detailed lab reports that were worth a substantial portion of our grade. I took it back in Winter 2007 though, so maybe things have changed.
