Disgustingly Bad Freshman Year

Hi, I would like to transfer to a UC but I’m not clear if I can based on my performance during my first year of college.

I went to CSU Chico for my first semester of college because the cross country coach offered me a spot on their roster. This was a prestigious honor because they are a high ranked team (5th nationally) so I took that opportunity. I ended up leaving that school because of personal reasons that forced me to go home every weekend an hour away. Also, I just hated the school and city and got out before the next semester began.

Here are my grades at CSU Chico:

PHIL 102 – Critical Thinking (3) - F
ENGL 130 – Academic Writing (3) - F
SOCI 133 – Sociology of Sexuality (3) - F
ECON 102 – Principles of Macroeconomics (3) - C
POLS 155 – American Government: National, State, and Local (3) – (F)

My GPA was a ridiculously low 0.4. I stopped showing up to class and basically just gave up on everything when my personal life overtook my school life. Thankfully, all of these courses can be retaken at the community college I transferred to.

Once I transferred to American River College, I didn’t do much better my next semester. Here are my grades from that semester:

PSYC 373 – Child Psychology (3) – D
STAT 300 – Introduction to Probability and Statistics (4) – C
CHEM 400 – General Chemistry (5) – W
SPORT 390 – Track and Field (2) – A

My cumulative GPA at this point was 1.04! Over the summer, I had to take two classes to stay eligible for cross country. I managed to get an A in Philosophy of Religion but an F in Human Development. After these summer classes and my first year of college, I was walking into my sophomore year with a 1.23 GPA.

This semester, I’ve turned it around and will probably get all A’s in my 16-unit schedule (General Chemistry is a B now, hope to get to an A).

I struggled with my first year of college due to huge family issues that left me an emotional mess and made me so unmotivated to pursue an education. I really have turned it around but I'm worried that it won't be enough when I transfer out in Fall 2013. I will continue getting all A's but I'm quite confused on what I can do about my freshman year.

My questions:
~ Is there way I can use the academic renewal system on my classes at CSU Chico? Do CSUs have academic renewal systems where I can explain to them how I couldn't focus on my education and I would like those grades "erased" (I know nothing is erased but what can I do to make that dampen down).

~ What about the classes I got a F, C, and D at my community college?

~ What can I do from here besides striving to get all A's?

I'm really lost on where to start so any information will be very pleased.

^^Study, study, and study some more. Where do you want to transfer to?

UC’s go by the quarter system, which means classes are only 10-weeks long (Compare to some CSU’s Semester system which is roughly 16-weeks long). Imagine being a full-time student and the classes go by fast, and I mean fast. However, UC Berkeley and Merced are Semester system. Go to your counselor and create a transfer plan on where you want to transfer to. Make an appointment.

I believe CSU’s do AR, ask your admissions and records office.

F’s and D’s don’t matter if they are non-transferable to a UC’s, however you cannot replace C’s since they are considered a passing grade. If you have F’s and D’s in a UC-transferable classes then I suggest you to re-take it for a B or A grades.

For transfers into UC, all that matters is your GPA and your major.

I’m not sure where I want to transfer to yet. I like to think I have options on where I can go UC wise but I’m not sure whats plausible and not. I’m also not sure what my major will be yet, but it will definitely be something along the lines of chemistry, biology, or psychology (Just to narrow it down). UC Berkeley will be great for chemistry and UCLA for biology (Hey, we all have dreams don’t we?). I would love to go to UC Davis as well. I haven’t done much research yet but definitely one of the top science UC schools.

Thanks for letting me know about ARs at CSUs. I will be doing that very soon.

Will the classes I failed at CSU Chico be “UC-transferable”? Obviously the D and F I have at American River are UC-transferable but what about classes at a CSU?

^^Some classes are transferable some are not. In order to find out which are you gotta meet up with your counselor and hit up the counselor at UCLA, Berkeley, and Davis.

I would advise you that UCLA and Berkeley are very competitive in terms of Chemistry, Biology, and Psychology majors. The average GPA of those majors for transfers are +3.8. I advise you to get “A’s” in all your classes from now on, avoid C’s at all cost and reduce “B’s” if you can. A friend of mine did not get accepted to either of these schools with 3.3 GPA for Biology.

UC-Davis on the other hand has TAG, so if you meet their minimum TAG requirements like a 3.2 GPA then you will be accepted.

Through hard work and dedication, you can do it!

^ everybody went though that or some, don’t worry, if you planning to retake them, then it is all cool, but when u want to apply for grad school, i think it is hard for you.

The classes I took at CSU Chico are the basic GE classes. Is it better to assume they are all transferable or do I need to talk to every UC counselor and ask if they’re transferable?

I think it’ll be best if I retake all of the classes because I plan on going to Grad school where they look at my cumulative GPA. It’ll be better to turn those “F” grades into “A” grades in the long run.

If I get an academic renewal for the classes I failed at CSU Chico and American River, do I need to retake them? Will it help me more in the long run if I retake them?

I have no problem putting in the work to get all “A’s”. I’m hoping its enough because I don’t want to push away any opportunities. What I want to know is if there’s anything more I could be doing besides getting better grades, running better, extra curriculum activites, etc.

There lies the problem. What more can I do to eliminate struggles I could have in the future? :P

^^You don’t have to do all those stuff, those only apply to incoming high schoolers. Transfer has it a lot easier since all we need is to finish our major once we transfer and not take a lot of space. It’s all about the GPA

Cliffs:
High School Seniors require to have high GPA, Extra curriculum, and etc.
Transfers only need competitive GPA

^ haha dude, I will just recommend to find some friends who actually concentrates in both study and play, be friends with them, and you will get influence. If you have the talent to motivate urself, or u have a great desire to success then you still can do it. Probably need something to turn you on LOL.

BUMP - for more feedback.
