I just found out today that my son was suspended from school after he was in summer school and didn't get the 2 A's he needed to bring up his GPA. The school say's he can come back in the spring, Can I change his FASA to a Community College so he can stay in school until he can go back?

Some things that you may want to consider before sending him off to community college:

Since it seems that he has been academically dismissed, you need to find out if his financial aid has also been suspended. If it has, he may not be able to use it at another school (not even loans)

You will need to find out if he will be able to attend (some schools will not allow students to attend any other school, while they are on dismissal from their school)

You need to find out if what take courses he can take at CC, that will cleanly transfer back to his college and give him credits toward graduation (remember that he will only transfer back credits, not the GPA. However, when it is time to go to grad school, he will have to submit the CC transcript)

Keep in mind that there is now a 6 year limit on federal aid. If there is a remote possibility that he will take longer than 4 years, rethink sending him to CC because you don’t want him to be toward the end of his degree and having exhausted all of his aid.

Personally, if he did not take care of his business, I would pay for the CC, but he would have to get a job to repay the $$

I recently received a dismissal noticed from my schools Registrars Office. The notice states that I’ll be dismissed for a FULL YEAR. I was wondering could I enroll in a community college in the meantime? And will financial aid cover it since I’ll be enrolled in two schools at the same time?

YOu can only be matriculated at one school at a time and therefore only receive financial aid at a time. You have to also inquire about the terms of your dismissal as some colleges do not allow you to enroll in other schools while you are on dismissal.

You do not want to enroll in another school until you know because you don’t want to spend money on credits that your current school may not take.

Also keep in mind that if you are a Pell grant recipient, that there is a 6 year limit on financial aid. You may not want to use your aid if there is a remote possibility that you may need it in order to graduate.
