Dissecting a Pig

In Pre-Vet we are going to dissect a pig. I am EXTREMELY excited but there's one problem. I am EXTREMELY nervous. I have a reputation of screwing up/messing you labs in numerous science classes. I nervous that I'm going to do something wrong and mess up. I really want to have fun and learn something but these nerves are really stressful.

Is dissecting hard? Also what ways can I ease up on the stress?

Speaking from personal experience, I strongly recommend that the one thing you avoid doing is vomiting on your sample.

Be prepared for the smell of the preserving fluid.
You may want to wear an old shirt over your school clothes in case some of the fluid splashes on you.
I’d bring disposable gloves from home and hand sanitizer.
Google Fetal Pig Dissection and you can get a jump on learning anatomy and what to do.
Good luck.

The smell of the preserving fluid is probably the first thing you’ll notice when you start dissecting. After awhile, you will become (somewhat) used to it, though.
Like batllo said, disposable gloves are a good idea.

I dissected a pig last year for AP biology and it was probably one of the most interesting things we did. It’s interesting to actually be able to see all the body parts that you’ve been studying all year.

Just make sure you’re careful and don’t cut too vigorously. Start out by cutting superficially and then you can go in deeper and deeper afterwards.

Dissecting really wasn’t that difficult after a little practice. If you have time, see if you can open the head and look at the brain.

You haven’t dissected anything before? I dissected stuff since elementary school. It’s easy, don’t worry.

@Batllo thanks~ My mom is a nurse so I’m sure sure she has the materials I need. I searched Google for the fetal pig dissections it was very helpful.

@caughtintraffic I’m taking AP Biology next year and they plan to dissect a cat. I can’t wait!
