Diversity and theater

So I have two questions that I hope some one more informed about amherst can answer:

Will being a middle class white male from Massachusetts hurt my chances of admission because I’m not very diverse.

How large is the theater department? Would a person truly dedicated to the performing arts be a contrast to their normal applicant?

Thanks :)

Being a white guy from MA won’t actively hurt you, though it won’t help, either. In the class of 2014, there were 52 students from MA, and the class was 58% white and 49% male.

In general, a commitment to the performing arts isn’t all that uncommon in the applicant pool, although being a male actor might be.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Nabokov!

Although showing dedication to the performing arts will likely distinguish you from other applicants, make sure that on your application you get across that you are interested in a variety of different subjects. It is a liberal arts college after all and encourages well-roundedness. Listen to this, it may help: [Behind The Scenes: How Do You Get Into Amherst? : NPR](<a href=“Behind The Scenes: How Do You Get Into Amherst? : NPR”>Behind The Scenes: How Do You Get Into Amherst? : NPR)

That was extremely interesting, thanks for the link. I suppose it’s all sort of a crapshoot with these type of schools then haha.
