Diversity? Or lack thereof?

cbomo's already in, fyi

RaboKarabekian: I don't think you understand what megathunder's feeling. First off, he started this thread because he was questioning whether or not Brown was a diverse, accepting community. But when a future Brown student, cbomo, made a disrespectful comment, it only strengthens his doubts about Brown. I'm not saying that all of Brown's population is a disrespectful or rude, but in cbomo's case, he is. Furthermore, I don't see how you can be supporting him with your last post by saying "oh yeah, just so you know, he's in" - when megathunder was clearly offended. Now, let's look at one example, with the minority, African Americans. Some of them are okay by being called the N-word, while many are not. Similarly, many Indians are okay with the statement "Go back to India" while others are not. Clearly, megathunder was one who took offense to the statement, and it is only right that cbomo apologizes - instead of being snotty. Respect people's feelings or don't expect to get your feelings respected either. So, RaboKarabekian and GhaleonQ: no, this thread hasn't gone too far. When you don't respect someone's feelings, why shouldn't we demand an apology? Don't expect people will keep mum about rude comments.

GhaleonQ: You say that Indians are better off than most immigrants and you use this as defense for cbomo's rude comment. First off, there are two problems with this comment - many Indians I know came to this country with less than $20 in hand and had to struggle, like any other immigrant, to make a decent living. Secondly, you use this money argument as "defense" for cbomo. Are you suggesting that just because someone has a few more thousand in the bank, that they deserve to be on the receiving end of rude comments? I think not.

I really don't see how telling whoever it was that cbomo's in is in any way offensive.

And honestly, if you want to be around people of similar ethnicity, then go to a UC or a all-black college. If you have doubts about Brown's diversity, and seriously think it's too white for you, then don't come. Or apply, and worry about it later. You might not even get in.

And how is forcing someone to apologize going to make anything better? No one is changing cbomo's mind, obviously, and will megathunder's pride really be satisfied if he types "sorry" in a way that will undoubtedly be sarcastic? Seriously, this is like 5-year-olds fighting until the teacher makes them both apologize. No one feels any better, both kids are still mad, and there is only a facade of peace.

I don't even know what to say. Reading these replies really **** me off. You people are so ridiculous.

You guys don't have to defend me, btw. But Rabo - you're awesome. I greatly look forward to meeting you in September. You and Ghaleon are the only rational people here.

Oakley - Rabo supports me because I didn't do anything wrong. Like I said, you and your supporters are too ****ing pc to take anything lightheartedly. And you can IN NO WAY compare calling africans "niggers" to me telling megathunder to go to India to find more Indians.

Now let's compare what I said to what you guys are interpreting this as:
What you guys think: "Go back to India!"
What I actually said: "If you want more Indians, go to India."
In no way did I suggest that I feel that he is unwelcome in the United States of America. You think I'm one of those arrogant Americans, but I'm not at all. I merely made the suggestion that if he prefers the company of his own race, he'd be happier in India than at any college in the U.S.

Jesus ****ing christ. Now you can all stop making assumptions about me and claiming I'm a xenophobe/racist with no compassion for my fellow man. I can't help it that you're all sheltered pc douches who believe you can immediately put yourselves in the right by calling your opponent "ignorant" or "rude." (You need new words.)

Can everyone just take a deep breath and count to five until we feel all calm inside? It comes down to a difference in opinion, and no amount of arguing or posts is going to change that.

At least cbomo clarified himself; although that is something which could have been done 40 posts before and in 2004.

I guess Brown is more self-consciously liberal than I thought!
The reputation exists, but you always think these things are exagerated. Wow!

It might just be CC. The livejournal forum is a lot less uptight.

"And when the **** have negative feelings lead to positive outcomes!!"

Are...are you serious? Negative feelings lead to change. That's the inherent idea of conflict.

"You say that Indians are better off than most immigrants and you use this as defense for cbomo's rude comment."

No. I was saying that mega's defense was stupid, not that a potentially offensive statement (if you consider it that) was justified.

"I guess Brown is more self-consciously liberal than I thought!
The reputation exists, but you always think these things are exagerated. Wow!"

Amen.

Goodbye, everyone. Hopefully, I get in and see you all on campus.
