I'm thinking about applying to Pomona and Scripps, but I have a few questions about the 5Cs in general. Firstly, i don't want to go to a school where everybody will know everybody. I want there to be enough people for me to still be able to meet new people often. With a total population of 6500 at the 5Cs, will this be a problem for me at all? Secondly, I'm looking for diversity in schools (a sizeable minority population, specifically Asian). Thirdly, I want to go to a school that is socially active, has a city feel, and is culturally rich. I'm spontaneous in nature and looking for a school that will fulfill my random late night cravings for food and will be full of people who enjoy going out of their comfort zone and are very welcoming. Do these two colleges seem like a good fit for me?

How many new people do you want to meet a day? If you want to average ten a day, then that will be problem by your junior year. If you can handle meeting just five new people a day, then you should be ok.

You are looking for diversity and that means a sizable minority population to you. But are you looking for diversity within that minority population or just as many Asians as possible?

So far I haven’t helped you much, so let me try again. Yes, in general the students who populate the 5Cs are very welcoming of random late night food cravings, but only those that are within their comfort zone.

@GrudeMonk I would like to be able to go to a party at any of the 5Cs and meet atleast a handful of new people each time. With a total student body of 6500 does that seem feasible? In terms of diversity, I’m looking for diversity within the minority population but I included the possibility of a high Asian population because that is what I am most familiar with. Thanks!

I don’t think anyone can answer your questions with complete authority. Obviously you have a better chance of meeting new people at UCLA versus the 5Cs. Are you mostly looking at bigger schools and wondering if Scripps or Pomona might be big enough for you? For me a student body of 6500 is certainly large enough. I would bet, however, that I’m not as outgoing as you and so your results may vary. I’m not much help.

Pomona’s student body is around 15% Asian and Scripp’s is probably higher than that. What’s a good number? Is around 50% white too high. Would you feel better at a school that is only 40% white? CalTech is not that far from the 5Cs and it has a very high Asian population. Maybe you’ll want to check it out for that reason, but I just can’t relate to this kind of thinking. Nearly anywhere you go you’ll be able to meet lots of very different people. I’m really trying because your response to my last post was very kind when I had answered some of your questions a little facetiously. I don’t think I can help you.

My only advice is to remember that you as an individual have the power to pick your own way and get what you want. If you are outgoing you’ll be able to meet lots of people at the 5Cs and I don’t think you’ll run out of new ones. If you do, you’ll be able to figure out another way to keep meeting new people. Perhaps you’ll find some kind of community service that will give you chance to meet and help many, many people. Good luck to you.
