DivOH Invitations for Class of 2015

tlashley, are you going in September or October?

September 25-27.

Congratulations to everyone who got invited!!

I just handed the rejection letter for Diversity Open House Weekend to my child.
He read it quickly and went to his room.
I do not know whether he will apply to Amherst or not. I hope he does but ……

Few notes:

 1. 200% increase in applications: I think Amherst said the same thing last year.
 2. I think Amherst waive application fee to all DivOH applicants.
 3. My child is a high stat Asian boy.

I just got the letter today. I didn’t get accepted. :(

My daughter just received her letter today. She was not accepted. The Assisant Dean of Admissions said that it was because there were so many applicants this year…700 for 160 spots. My daughter also visited the campus twice before. He also said that she was a strong applicant for admissions.

Her friend was accepted today. She visited the campus once before.

We were not as disappointed when we first heard of why she did not get in. But, after hearing that her friend was accepted we are crushed and not sure what to believe.

We are hispanic and our friends are african american. I don’t know if this makes a difference or if my daughter just didn’t make the cut because of academics (they are pretty good).

Does anybody have any feedback on this?

Parentnj:
It seems like your D got a different letter than my S.
The letter my S got did not mention any numbers. It just said there were 200% increase in applications.

both of you are considered to be minorities. when i attended DIVOH last year, the 80 or so of us were very diverse, consisting of mainly minorities (african-american, hispanic, native-american) along with a few asians and caucasians. it was a very highly selective applicant pool, so it is very hard to get in, even with very high stats and grades. not getting into divoh does not mean that you can’t get into amherst. and also, getting into divoh doesn’t mean you will definitely get into amherst either.

BTaverage,

I called and spoke to them. That is where I received the numbers. I am sure that I received the same letter as you.

Rejected, too (asian girl) in Texas. Not too upset but a little disappointed, because though I have strong stats I don’t have much else going for me. The acceptance rate is still lots higher than RD, so not sure if I’m still going to apply.
Congrats to everyone who got in, especially you, elbeeen  I see you around a lot, being helpful, glad you got in.

ACCEPTED, and they pay for everything

Wow lizabet that was really nice of you  And I don’t think you should let this deter you from applying to Amherst. This application was one page comprised almost entirely of stats and a stringent essay! Your college application will reflect your personality MUCH more effectively! Plus, you have the fee waiver. It doesn’t hurt to try!

I was not accepted :frowning: I wanted to see the campus before I even considered applying, but now I’m not sure what to do.

Yay I got in for September! but my friend (both Asians) didn’t so I’m actually scared to go by myself (at this age -_-). The Saturday’s also the first day for Columbia SHP, but since I live only 3.5 hours away and NOT 4 hours away, I have to miss it and take the train rather than the plane…

Anyone in VA hear anything yet?

I was rejected, unfortunately. I am sad to hear this, I was really hoping to see the school before I applied, and there are not many options in California for great liberal arts colleges. (Pomona, Claremont, and Occidental are good, but other than that the pool is a bit shallow!) I still love the school though, and I think I will still consider it one of my choices when applying.

idiotqueen92 we might meet eachother on the train because all locations west of amherst connect in NYC!

and if anyone else gets accepted, start a facebook group! i’ll join but i definitely won’t start one myself lol

Looked some of you guys up and alot of the people who were accepted have exceedingly lower STATS than those that were rejected…

That was a little rude…but it just goes to show stats aren’t everything.

Well isn’t Amherst supposed to be the best LAC in the country? Why are people with 2350s being rejected from this program?

Because Amherst doesn’t just want a class of 2350’s, plain and simple. 2350 is simply a number that somebody earned on one test day. You can ask the same of any top school, not one of them admits solely on numbers alone.
