I tend to agree. And I know a few URM students who were invited to apply, and who are VERY interested in Amherst, but are not applying because they’ve already visited or because they have the resources to visit on their own. I think that speaks well of them.

Does anyone have a copy of the amherst application sheet? I filled it out and the day I wanted to send it, it disappeared. Can anyone help me? I really was looking forward to going.

what’s your email? I will send you one, but you could as the admission office. Do you want the application right?

Bluepurple, racial diversity is certainly the main goal of DivOH, not socioeconomic diversity. Wealthy minorities exist, and they want to go to Amherst as well, and they are often targeted and accepted to DivOH.

Financial need isn’t the primary criterion. My daughter was invited some years ago and she is not on financial aid as well as numerous other students who attended the Diversity Open House. I think it would be wise to attend, if invited and if you’re serious about attending Amherst because it does give one an admissions edge. An institution isn’t going to make a financial investment in bringing you to campus unless they are seriously interested in you. This will be even more the case this year, considering the financial times. Best of luck to all of you. Amherst is an incredible institutuion.

Do your academics/SAT scores really matter so much for being chosen?

I’m sending in my application right now…

I’d think they’d matter a bit . . . As others have said, if a college is going to shell out the money to fly a student to their campus, they are likely going to pick students who actually stand a good chance of being accepted.

there’s a range of scores. I think people who are serious about Amherst should apply. They aren’t going to accept but a small number of students to fly in. However, rejection for this weekend doesn’t mean you aren’t a strong candidate.

I hope not… I ended up putting both my SAT and ACT scores down even though my SAT scores suck. I have a pretty solid 31 ACT score, which I think is at least decent.

I had no idea what my GPA was on the whatever scale though… I think I put 4.87.

Just curious . . . what grade system does your school use? :)

Any-who, the deadline is this Friday! Make sure to send your apps everyone I’d expect the decisions for selected students to be out in late August . . . Anyone have any more info?

I don’t know what they even mean by “late August!” I sure hope I get it, though.

I applied! Thanks CC - I never would’ve known about this otherwise… now hopefully I get in:)

Anyone get news?

Not yet My guess would be first notifcations . . . late this week/early next week?

Hmmm . . . I pulled up some old threads to see when notifications are normally sent. It 2007 it seems as if they came out as late as September 7th, while last summer people were notified as early as the 18th of August, though most were notifed on September 5th.

Alright, cool. Thanks for looking that up! I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated.

Does anyone know how going to DIVOH will affect your actual application to Amherst later?

Nada for anything in Ohio Maybe they do it geographically?

Lilika, in the past, it significantly increased your chances for acceptance. I think when my daughter attended (she’s in the class of 2011), her letter said 75% of students who attend the diversity weekend were accepted. When she applied, they also waived the application fee. After that weekend visit, she was sold and applied early decision and was accepted. It was wonderful to be done with college applications by early December. You should be aware that all of the acceptance letters to this weekend don’t go out at once. We live in California and my daughter heard 3-5 days later than her friends on the east coast. It was nerve racking because she just assumed she wasn’t accepted. Best of luck to all of you. Amherst is an extraordinary college.

^ ^ ^ Can anyone confirm the increased acceptance rate? From what I’ve heard, 70% of students who attend DIVOH apply to Amherst, but I’ve never heard a specific acceptance rate increase.

Impw’s rates are accurate. Her D is class of '11, and mine is class of’12. Both attended Divoh. Yes your chance of admittance is MUCH greater, that is because you have already been pre screened for Divoh. They are not going to fly you out there if they didn’t think you were a viable candidate in the first place.

Amherst is the leading institution in Diversity, however you still need the qualifications to get in.
