So today I went to my counselor because I wanted to take French II online instead of in school for honors credit and take AP Stat in place of that and I first asked her if online courses count for credit. Here’s part of the conversation:
Me: “If I were to take an Honors or AP course online would that count for credit?”
Counselor: “What do you mean?”
Me: “If I took an honors course like French II online next year would I get honors credits in school?”
Counselor: “Um… no, I don’t think so.”
Keep in mind that this is her first year as a counselor. I get that my school might have a policy against taking online courses to get credit in school, but she really didn’t seem to have information about online courses (which I don’t blame her because online courses aren’t common here).
My question is do all public schools accept online course credit? I’m talking for popular virtual schools like Apex or FLVS. I might try e-mailing someone in my school and asking because my counselor wasn’t knowledgeable on the subject but I want to know if all/most public schools accept credit for online courses.
My school/district doesn’t accept any online courses except in extenuating circumstances (moved from someplace else and is behind normal tracks, missed school due to medical problems and had to drop classes). I’d email your school about it.
There is no requirement that public schools have to accept credit from online courses. It entirely depends on your school. I’d ask another counselor, one who has been there longer than the one you have now, or somebody else that would know in your school administration.
(A few states actually do have flex credit laws that force schools to give you credit for online courses if you can pass a school-mandated test as well…it doesn’t look like you’re in one of those states, though.)
I live in California and I dont think they allow getting credit for courses that are taken online. I was barely able to be approved of taking a summer course to get ahead in Math but my counsoler said that I won’t get credits for the course.
