Hi I am a interested student in USC and have heard greek life is huge at usc but am not sure if I am willing to go through it all if I will be hazed..do all the frats haze or are there some that don't...would help if someone who is greek at sc could help me out! Thanks!

I can tell you that not all frats haze. One guy posted about how ATO doesn’t haze anymore. I know Lambda and Phi Delt don’t haze as well and I’m sure there are a few more.

All frats haze in some form or another. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. Now some frats may haze less than others, but trust me, they all haze.

Pledging is what… 3 or 4 weeks in? Most of the real hazing doesn’t start until around now anyways so I wouldn’t take that statement with too much merit.

Yeah, most fraternity haze to some extent. It’s just how they do it and the severity that will differ from fraternity to fraternity. The only exception right now, I believe, is Fiji (Phi Gamma Delta) because it is being reestablished so they are looking to start it up, but once they have their first class, they likely will too.

EDIT: Just to clarify about Fiji. They can’t really haze because the first class will not have to go through a rush semester since they’re the first class.

Solomonm- Don’t talk about things you have no idea about, you just sound like a moron.

Not all fraternities haze- I can say that I was not hazed once during pledge semester.

Right… because I’ve pledge 2 different fraternities at 2 different schools and have tons of friends in the greek system… I must know NOTHING about the hazing that goes on. Don’t call me a moron and insinuate that I’m uneducated on the issue when you have no clue who I am or about my background. Stop perpetuating propaganda.

Granted like I said earlier, some fraternities may not haze NEARLY as bad as others and may have a relatively light program, but they all haze in one way or another. I wouldn’t let this fact dissuade anyone from joining a fraternity though. It’s a very beneficial and rewarding experience. Just don’t go into it thinking that you won’t be hazed. That’s all I’m saying.

Is Fiji legit? Worth getting into its first year? Do they have a house?

pi kappa phi (pikapp) does not haze. they used to, but they kicked off the row for it a few years back (along with some other issues). they’ll be back on the row next year with a house, since the ZBT house actually belongs to pikapp.

I’m going to have to agree with Solomonm, all the frats, or at least IFC frats haze. Just because they aren’t making their pledges do the elephant walk doesnt mean they aren’t hazing. They’re just not doing what you’d typicaly think of as hazing. And to be honest, hazing increases the brotherhood. If there’s no time commitment, then the brotherhood in the house is going to suck.

Do sororities haze or what? I don’t know much about Greek life and will almost definitely refrain from joining, but I’m just curious how they decide whom to let into sororities.

whoever does matt barkley first

There’s a lot of misinformation floating around in this thread.

Not all IFC fraternities haze. Theta Chi and Lambda Chi Alpha have no hazing whatsoever. Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) does haze, they just don’t beat their pledges anymore–hence their claim of “no hazing”, because this semester is the first time the physical aspect has been removed (somewhat).

I don’t know too much about other fraternities’ hazing policies. That’s all I can think of offhand, I may revise this later.

Ok a lot of u guys are getting this idea wrong. It really depends on how you define “hazing.” Technically wearing pins everyday and wearing suits on mondays is a form of hazing. Being referred to as pledges is considered hazing, as your supposed to be considered “candidates.”
I have heard that ATO DOES still does haze in very ****ed up ways, and Lamba Chi has the reputation of “Rambda Guy.” One of my good friends in theta chi told me that there is a little bit of hazing, but its nothing that bad.
But yeah like any team or organization, the rookies have to do the dirty work, thats just the way it is. Vets on Pro NFL teams make the rookies carry their bags, you just have to respect the older guys and do what they tell you if you wanna earn their respect. If you are thinking about joining a frat, you should expect to be treated as a rookie, and that you have no entitlement to their brotherhood… you have to earn it.

Solonmonm,

Youve pledged two different fraternities at two different schools? I hope youve only been initiated at one…

All fraternities haze. But in different ways. Sigma Chi and Lambda Chi haze in a more mental way and they are known as an easier pledgeship. SAE, PIKE, AEPI, and TKE are examples of houses that take a more handson approach.

Do not let hazing deter you from pledging a house. My pledge semester was the best Ive had here, hazing or not.

So, I was wondering what some of the fraternities do as far as hazing goes, particularly phi psi and sigma. I’m not that big of a drinker, only occasionally in social situations, but I still like to have unwind and party after working hard all week. Will this put me at a disadvantage?

Also, what are some of the worst stories regarding hazing at USC?

Sigma Chi is the best fraternity. My son pledged their last semester. Ask around when you get to rush. You will find the best one that suits you. Pledge with some friends. It will be the best experience of your life. (according to my son)

By the way, they all claim they do not make your drink but all have alcohol as part of their pledge, initiation. To what extent varies for each fraternity.

there*

oh and lol @

Just a little push for Sigma Chi. They have a very active parents group by the way!

What about phi psi? Does anyone know what they do in terms of hazing?

^^ Hahaha, if you’re worried about hazing, don’t pledge Phi Psi. :)
