Do any of our lives make the slightest difference in the world?

I mean, our whole world is us, but the whole world is different. It doesn't care about us. We don't even make the slightest difference in the world, though we'd like to think otherwise. It really makes me feel selfish because here I am thinking all about my life and I don't even matter. Discuss

As a single individual, no I believe we don’t really matter, but for a person to make a difference, they need support. Groups of people make a difference.

Nobody can “make a difference” alone, even if that help is not noticeable.

it’s ridiculous to say that you make no difference. every action has consequences.

i’ve made a difference in the lives of individuals i care about

and that’s all that matters to me :)

I don’t care to make a difference. At least not a good difference. I have a nefarious plot to become an evil criminal mastermind bent on world domination – any difference I make will result in the destruction of mankind.

And bunnies.

I believe that each individual can make a difference, though it is a choice. Each individual is given a life, and it is up to them to utilize it. Some people choose to act in self interersts, while others find ways to help the world as a whole. I also believes the meaning of the word “difference” varies between people. Some would describe themselves as having made a difference to their society by attributing support at a local shelter and donating their time to help others. Others would define the word “difference” as something as ending world hunger or enabling countries to coexist in peace. In my opinion, to achieve the later definition, one needs support. However, for the prior definition, small acts have large rewards. Though we as a society may not ever achieve the later difference, each positive attribution from an individual has an effect, and as more people perform these small tasks, they add up. While I don’t believe one person alone can solve something like world hunger, I do believe that each individual life that adds to those acts matters. Without that life or contribution, we as a society would not be as ahead as we are today. I think that as long as one contributes in some small positive act, their life should be valued and meaningful.

I have a feeling that your plot isn’t going to work, PlattsburghLoser. Simply because if you really did want to take over the world, you wouldn’t be on CC ;)

And yes. I think one person can make a difference, even if they don’t realize it.

our destinies are connected in some way. so if you weren’t on Earth then it would somehow make a difference in my life and the lives of others. or simply put i’d say the Butterfly Theory ;]

Oh, but CC is in my plot! I’d share my plot with you, but then I’d have to poke a chicken with a celery stick. And celery is so expensive these days.

Oh, yeah, I mean, three dollars is just outrageous!
That’s okay. I guess I’ll find out sooner or later if you follow through with your plan.

I’ve made a difference in my life, in my world. That matters.

You make a difference in your friends’ lives everyday whether you realize it or not.

I think the rest of the world is an elaborate figment of my imagination and the universe is nothing but my isolated consciousness.

“I have a feeling that your plot isn’t going to work, PlattsburghLoser. Simply because if you really did want to take over the world, you wouldn’t be on CC”

What better place is there for today’s budding sociopaths than Harvard or Princeton?

… or SUNY Plattsburgh

As individuals me might not make a difference but as a whole we do.

there’s no me in we, LIT

The differences we make may be large or small, but they help make a better world.

From an oldsters perspective. . . . I just got back from the weekly concerts that my wife’s club puts on for free in Town . . . hundreds of adults and children taking a break from usual life, listening to music, playing and visiting with friends and family, and tonight that made a small difference.

A couple of friends and I started a music school in my Town last year; 6 kids now play instruments; a small change, true.

A friend of my younger brother’s recently told me it was important to him that I treated him like an equal back in high school instead of the twerp friend of my kid brother that he felt he was. And I remember Manny Schaeffer’s class in Urban Geography that got me started on my life work as a land use planner.

Very few of us do world changing things; but every one of us has the power to make small positive changes in the world and people around us.

We are stardust/we are golden

P.S. even in Flattsburgh

In a word, absolutely.
