Do asians fit in at Vandy?

Hi. I was accepted to Vandy and I was pretty shocked and really elated. Although I admire the school's amazing academic and social life, I am a bit...well...circumspect of its "perspectives" to asians. Since Vandy almost 66% of the students are white, I was wondering if there are any discriminations or some sort of condescending atmosphere?

I know I'm taking the extreme side here, but I'm more curious of how much the degree of these "perspectives" are there in school.

Hi! I’m an asian, too. Looks like we are gonna be schoolmates. I can’t say I’m not worried about other’s “perspectives” to asians, but I think it’s gonna be fine.

have you visited Vanderbilt? I am considering a visit during their open house in mid April. by the way, i am Asian. Spent my entire life in N. Cal.

@KaylaSun Great! I hope I can find you in Vandy
@myboy123 I live abroad so I can’t attend their open house, but I’ll proabably go to the reception they are holding in our country.

Asian freshman from the northeast here.

It is not hard for Asians to fit in here. Vandy’s Asian percentage may be lower than at schools like the Ivies. However, I still see plenty of Asians around, and I never feel like I stand out or am singled out. I have a pretty diverse group of friends, and I haven’t faced any discrimination for being Asian during my time here.

HOWEVER, there is a lot of self-segregation here. The majority of Asians here keep to themselves and rarely interact outside of the “Asian bubble.” It’s honestly pretty sad, because I expected people to be more open-minded and try to get outside of their comfort zones and meet people outside of their own race. The overall community is very accepting of Asians, but most Asians tend to just group together.

^^^thanks for your input. the self-segregation phenomenon is very well presented at my high school and my community in northern California.

^I’ve sad it repeatedly on these boards, there is some segregation here and it’s ENTIRELY self-segregation. Much more apparent in the Malaysian community but also with some other ethnicities. The ones who choose to be a part of the greater student body are integrated just like anyone else.

@imsobored: How large was your Asian population back at home? After reading through a couple testimonies, I’m as worried anymore, but still a bit scared about the initial few months. I come from a high school with a 40-some% Asian population so it would be a HUGE change for me…

My high school is like 60% asian, I feel ya Julie haha.
