I don’t know what your military experience is, but I don’t think there’s ever been a 9-year E-9. Normally an E-9 has 20+ years of experience

Although an O-1 does outrank an E-9, I’d love to see the butter bar who tries to tell a SGM or CSM how things are going to be. BLUF is that 2LT’s have rank on their NCO’s, but should defer to their years of experience on some things. Officers are in charge, but NCO’s still have the experience edge and should be used as a resource by any officer, newly-commissioned or not.

nic767 sorry for the misunderstanding but I’m a junior in high school. In my original post I stated that most of my infomation was taken from the internet which stated that a Sergeant Major needs a MINIMUM of nine years to attain that rank. Obviously most have more than that.

Also realize that most Sergeant Majors are NOT the guy from We Were Soldiers. They are essentially managers for most of their duties. They are NOT the primary combat leaders. E2s-E6s do most of the fighting, with the junior NCOs doing a lot of the combat leadership. Does that mean LTs and senior NCOs don’t fight? NO, a good leader often leads from the front, but the actual trigger pulling is usually not their primary responsibility.
