If so how much more do they give?
For GPA calculation purposes, only UC approved Honors, AP, IB or DE courses will give you extra honors points and capped at 8 semesters for 10-11th grades.
EI is based on your Capped weighted CSU and SAT/ACT scores so taking more than the minimum 15 a-g courses will not affect your EI but help in your HS rigor.
You must meet the minimum 15 a-g courses to apply to the Cal States, however most competitive students will have more than 15 a-g courses and go above and beyond these minimums.
Only way to increase your EI as a Senior is to bump up your test scores by December.
CPS SLO kind of does, the rest, no
But Cal Poly SLO does not use an Eligiblity index for admissions. They calculate an MCA point score and you get bonus points for extra a-g courses in that calculation. @Whyyyme, based on your postings and your stats, SLO will not even be an option.
I am a parent of high school senior and I am having the hardest time understanding the Cal State app. We have entered all her A-G courses and the GPA is coming out to 4.09, when we expected a 4.2. Do the cal states calculate based on pluses and minuses? For example, an A- is 3.7? Also, my daughter took several A-G classes at our community college while concurrently enrolled in high school. They are on her high school transcript, however her high school gives an extra grade point for college classes. So, for every A my daughter received at the college, it is counted as 5. She wouldn’t have taken the classes there had she know the Cal States wouldn’t recognize them as deserving an extra grade point. For example, she took History 111 at the college, which converts to AP US History. But AP US History gives her an extra grade point, while Hist 111 at the college doesn’t.
Also, for every “extra” A-G course we enter, her GPA goes down slightly- even when entering an A. It seems they just water down the GPA because it is only adding another “4” instead of a 5.
HELP!
@dana37 If I am reading your post correctly, maybe the issue you and your daughter are experiencing, is the CSU Apply app GPA caps at 8 honors or AP classes. So, if your daughter has taken anything over 8, those extra will not count towards her GPA. Her high school transcript may show a higher GPA, because her school does not cap when calculating her GPA as the CSU app does. Not sure if this helps at all!
@dana37: @CSUdream is correct that if she has more than 8 semesters of UC approved Honors, AP, IB or DE courses taken 10-11th grades, the CSU’s will use that cap but the HS GPA may not consider that cap.
DE courses should be given Honors points in the Cal State apply application if they are a-g courses and if they are a 1 semester college class = 1 year course for the Cal states so the grade is entered twice.
Those DE courses should be CSU/UC transferable so it will help her get college credit thus reducing the # of courses she may have to take at the college she attends. Also, the CSU’s and UC’s will note her increased HS course rigor so not a loss in taking the courses.
