Do classes open up before orientation sessions?

I am a transfer student. My orientation is on the 25th and 26th of June. I've been monitoring the classes I need to register for and they're all full or filling quickly. Should I be worried? A friend told me UGS classes open up a few spots before each orientation session, is it the same for other classes?

Not sure about all classes, but the advisers have said many of them have been marked as ‘closed’ only temporarily specifically for orientation and will be released on the registration day (day 3 of orientation).

Unless things have changed, more classes will open up each week during the summer orientation sessions. So you can go in once a week at the right time and try to get a better schedule. Having said that, my son had a hard time finding ANY UGS class to fit his schedule. He ended up taking one that he dropped first semester, and the one second semester wasn’t much better.

Which is why you try your hardest to get into a FIG, which will guarantee you not only a UGS class but, if you’re doing something like premed and you sign up for the preprofessional fig Health Explorers, it also gets you into Chem 301, a probably very popular class, PLUS it helps you get a way better concrete idea of your schedule and timing when you’re planning all that the night before. Trust me, get into a FIG and it will make your life easier. It’s certainly making mine way better.

The answer is not necessarily. If they feel they need more of the classes and if its one everyone takes like an intro class or something then maybe. What you need to do is register for atleast 12 hours even if its just filler hours and get on all the waitlists. Unless its a really easy popular class like Yoga or something you will usually get off of the waitlist. If you dont youll just have to 1) take it next semester or 2) go to the department and see if they are willing to force you into the class. There is nothing you councelor can do about it either as far as forcing you in a class goes

Also, what they told me was classes that have the status “waitlisted” are not the same. While they save spots for each orientation for most “closed” classes, “waitlisted” classes don’t have any.
