Do colleges and universities care if I play an instrument?

Hi! :)

Well, I've been playing the cello for 11 years. I'm in high school orchestra, and I plan to take it for all four years. But my friends have been telling me to quit. They're all like, "Oh whatever. No school is going to care if you play an instrument or if you're in orchestra." Just letting you know, I'm NOT doing orchestra and cello JUST for applications. I really really do enjoy it. I don't plan to major on music or anything; it's just a favorite hobby of mine. However, I do have to wonder, if I put it on my resumes, will schools just brush it off? Or will they care?

I’m in a very similar situation, so I wanted to keep track of this thread. I’m not in any major non-school-related orchestras, but I’m going to enter a music competition just to have something extra.

Schools care about any extracurricular you are passionate about. Don’t listen to your friends. On the common app you can list “cello” then how many years and how many hours you play a week. You can even write about playing cello in your short answer or larger essay.
