Hi, I'm in 9th gade and I was wondering how important it is to colleges if I take band or orchestra because I really want to quit cello because I'm so bad.

don't quick dood!! you never know music might be you passion? XD yeah I am writing about it for my UC personal statement...so I would try it out if I were you...

Wouldn't it look better on my transcript if i took some AP class instead? The most I intend to accomplish with my instrument is getting an A in the class and not joining any kind of outside orchestra or anything so if that was the case an AP class would outdo orchestra, right?

Try to take and do as much as you can...you will need alot of fire power when you're a senior...College become more and more competitive each years :/

I'll encourage you to continue if you absolutely enjoy. There's no point if you don't. Again, giving up cello just because you think you're bad, although you enjoy playing, may not be a good idea, either. Also, I don't know how long you've been playing. You might just pick up another instrument and just think you were born to play it.

Now, worrying about what your prospective college might think is another matter entirely. What you do is not that important to the college, as how important the stuff you do is to you. And that's your passion for your activities - that's what they really want to see.

And except you'd want to play in college band or orchestra, you don't have to worry about quitting. Tons of other activities go on, and regardless of the fact that the college would want to admit a good mix of various talents, you'll probably fit in into other spheres of student life.

Personally, I enjoy music, and I've been playing piano for 8yrs...I started on classical guitar 2 years ago. Then I picked up the bass 11mths ago, and the chemistry was instant. I now play bass here at college, and take piano lessons, and I'm also into music theory.

Just do what you enjoy doing, and you won't go wrong.
