So I have taken 4 AP classes throughout high school (including senior year), but taken 10 honors classes. Our school does not weigh honors classes and offers about 7 to 10 AP classes. Will this hurt my chances to get into my schools? HELP!
Admissions look at your course rigor with respect to what your school offers. 4/7-10 AP classes seems like a good course load, but maybe not very rigorous for top-tier schools.
Thank you for your response! ya I have taken all honors classes offered in high school, However, I only took AP classes on subjects that I was confident on, such as math and science. Also what do you mean by top- tier schools? Are Virginia tech and George mason a good reach for me? My GPA is 3.75 with 1170 SAT score. Your response will be appreciated
Top tier means Stanford,Yale, etc… I think you are aiming appropriately.
Even for HYP schools, 7-10 AP classes are sufficient. As mentioned, part of it also depends upon what is offered by the HS. Additionally, if another student is applying for the same school with 15 AP’s and better stats, then yes, 7-10 might be at a disadvantage. However, there is not hard and fast rule, as these schools evaluate applications holistically.
I would hope at a school offering 7-10 AP classes someone isn’t taking 15 APs…
Although I have seen kids take / pass 25… and be the AP Scholar for the state.
If your school offers honors classes and you’re aiming for a selective college, then yes you should take them and it does factor into their choice. Some state schools actually add up AP+ honors to have an approximation of course rigor (ie, did you take 4 rigorous academic classes each year? = 16 honors + AP. Did you take 5? =>20).
Talk to your guidance counselor. It is all a function of what your HS offers and how selective the college you are applying to is. The top schools want to see that you have taken the most rigorous courseload available as determined by your guidance counselor.
At my school, Honors classes have the same weight as AP classes. They are considered almost identical at my school due to the same GPA weight.
