Do colleges check what type of asian you are?

I am Kazakhstani and obviously that is asian, but will UCLA or UC Berkeley check which type of asian I am, or will they just classify me as asian?

Also, is Kazakhstan considered a minority?

why would you be interested and why would they?

I was just trying to get a feel for how colleges work, lol. I know that my ethnicity won’t be the deal-breaker, I just want to see if colleges take the time to look at which type of asian you are instead of generalizing all asians as one

By the way, I was born in California and raised, my parents are from Kazakhstan.

No. They don’t.

Well, just saying your parents are from Kazakhstan doesn’t say a lot. Are they ethnic Russian or ethnic Kazakh?

In any case, UC schools are legally barred from considering race.

On Common App there is a list of boxes under “Asian” and you get to click on the Asian subcategory that applies or fill it in if it’s not there. Which Kazakh probably isn’t. So if a school looks at Race (which I gather UCs don’t), then the first page of the app would say, under Race, something like “Asian, Other, Kazakh.”

Thank you so much! This was really helpful!
