Do colleges keep in touch with your guidance office?

I’m wondering if colleges and your guidance office speak after your documents are sent. I wonder what they say about you. Hopefully if my guidance counselor does it she only says the best!

They do call to get clarity on a course or to confirm things occasionally.

Beyond just getting the required documentation in order, AOs and GCs do sometimes talk specifically about applicants, it depends on the college and its policies, as well as other factors such as pre-existing relationships, etc.

I think some are also in touch regularly. AOs have to market at most schools to get applicants. Having a Gc suggest your school to a kid that doesn’t know anything can help the schools get top of mind when someone starts a college search.
AOs do more than answer questions and read apps. It’s part marketing too.

As with so many things in admissions, it depends. At some private prep schools and top public HS the GC staff may be in contact with adcoms representing their region. This is mentioned in the book “The Gatekeepers”. These can be called “feeder” schools, places where top colleges regularly find students. To no surprise having a GC go to bat for a kid on the fence can help (or hurt if the GC doesn’t feel the kid is right for the college).

Far more typical, though, is the large public HS where the GC staff is busy trying to keep the marginal kids in school and just don’t have time to get to know, let alone advise, the better students. If this is your HS and you are more or less a stranger to your GC then should a college call it would be to clarify something such as what courses are offered or other idiosyncrasies of your HS, not for personalized feedback.
