Hypothetical scenario: Guy doesn't study for sat, takes the test in 10th grade and gets like a ... 1800 or something.
A year later, he starts studying up and gets something like 2200.

Will colleges frown upon the bad score and get all suspicious, or find it great that the guy improved?

I am asking this of course because I did crap on my sat last year. I wanted to use score choice, but what the f - today I logged onto collegeboard and found that when I sent my subject tests to NYU they automatically sent my old sat scores as well. I am panicking!

Most colleges only look at your higher scores.
As long as you retake the SAT before you apply to the school, you’ll be fine.
Of course you’re going to get a lower score as sophomore than you would as a junior - you know less!

On similar lines, I took the SAT as part of a bet freshman year and got a pretty low score (comparatively). Will that be counted, if I did much better my second time (October 09)?

When you’re applying as a senior, I really don’t think they’ll care about your 9th/10th grade scores at all. Obviously you’re older now, you’ve learned more things… your score 2 or 3 years ago isn’t that relevant to you now.
