In 8th Grade, I took Accelerated Algebra 1 and Geometry A. I got a 87% first semester and a 90% second semester (both without the 7 points). The yearly average is coming to an 88%. This is an honors class so I do get the 7 points added, but I was told that some colleges subtract the 7 points.
I heard that colleges recalculate GPA, how do they do this and will my Accelerated Algebra 1 and Geometry A grade be calculated in that?
This might just be me not having exposure to some school districts, but I’m confused what you mean by the whole 7 points thing. I’ve never heard of anything like it.
Anyway, schools don’t really share whether they do or don’t recalculate GPAs. It’s assumed that super competitive schools like T20s and ivies do, since everything in their admissions comes down to the wire. In the rare case a school does say they recalculate, it’s unlikely they’ll share the intricacies how (UCs being an exception). Every school has their own quirks in the system. UCs and others have a whole formula based on certain classes and some schools eliminate freshman year grades.
The “standard” grade calculation formula I’ve seen most school districts and posters on here use is this (or some variant) for GPA calculation:
A (90-100) = 4.0
B (80-89) = 3.0
C (70-79) = 2.0
D (60-69) = 1.0
F (< 60) = 0.0
AP/IB/DE +1.0
Honors +0.5
Keep in mind some schools won’t add the bump for AP/IB/DE/Honors classes.
Some colleges do recalculate GPA but in general you don’t know which colleges do recalculate GPA and/or how they recalculate GPA. Some colleges use unweighted GPA, some use academic classes only etc. All you can do is focus on doing as well as you can in the classes you take.
Many colleges just take GPA off HS transcripts. The larger the school, the more likely it does this and does not recalculate GPAs.
For the ones that do recalculate, if their methodology is not on the website (there are many methodologies!) you can always ask admissons.
Good luck.
