Do you have to send or self report all AP scores to colleges when you’re applying? Thanks!
You don’t send a score report when applying. You can report all/some/none on the application. Be aware though that some high schools list AP scores on the transcript.
With an exception, you are not required to either report or provide official scores for AP courses when applying for college. The exception is that there are some colleges that accept AP scores in lieu of your providing either SAT or ACT scores or providing SAT subject tests scores, and if you choose to apply to one of those colleges (e.g., NYU) and go that route, you will need to report the scores in the app or send official scores if the college requires official scores.
Also, despite not having to report them, some colleges, including many high ranks, do consider them for admission, and thus you may want to provide them if they are any good.
Finally, as to whether you can successfully avoid having the college learn of your AP scores, you should be aware that many high schools put your AP scores on the official high school transcript sent to colleges , so you need to check what your high school does,.
Fret not…colleges are much more concerned about your grades in those classes as opposed to the AP tests.
Why is that?
- Doing well in a class shows you can learn over the year and work hard over a period of time. That is what they want in college.
- Not all HS have many APs.
- Many people take AP tests senior year which is too late for admissions
For example, Stanford says:
Students currently enrolled in AP courses are not required to submit AP scores as part of our admission process. AP scores that are reported are acknowledged but rarely play a significant role in the evaluation of an application. Grades earned over the course of a term, or a year, and evaluations from instructors who can comment on classroom engagement provide us with the most detailed insight into a student’s readiness for the academic rigors of Stanford.

I agree with all of the above. We never sent AP scores until my D was accepted to a school.
What I find odd is the consensus view that a class grade is a much better indication of learning, but credit is granted based on the test score. Hs anyone ever seen an AP class score included in the decision to grant credit?
