just wondering. if you got all A's but had horrible attendance, would it still affect you negatively?

Your attendance would only be seen by colleges if your high school puts that information on their official transcript.

When I applied years ago, one school specifically asked for attendance record. I was rejected.

@Wordworker which school?

I’ve never heard of what wordworker describes. Even so, how can he/she ascribe the rejection due to attendance? Like scuba says, colleges really only care about your grades. Many kids have chronic illnesses or other circumstances that affect attendance.

We were told that attendance is not part of the normal application process; a guidance counselor might mention it (either in a positive or negative manner) in his or her recommendation letter though.

It was Radcliffe, the women’s college at Harvard (back in the days of separate admissions). It probably was the most competitive school for women, and I didn’t get in, although I made it into two other Ivies and my local public safety. The Radcliffe application explicitly asked for attendance information and said it was considered very important.
