*** Wait, I am confused. I logged on and the Solar thing changed to say that my application is complete and decision will be made shortly but i can click on all the new student stuff and make a deposit.... does that mean I got in? -- i think it does :)

So, I am about to make the deposit, is the Orientation Deposit mandatory? I sort of need to know when orientation is if I can go to it. Is it all in one day? when does it usually take place (Month? Weekday?)

Thanks Chris!!!

Ohh and BTW when do transcript evaluations for transfer take place ? post orinetaiton?

Yes, Orientation is mandatory, and so is the fee. It's a half-day, weekday program in January; your date will be assigned in the order you pay your deposits.

You'll get your transcript evaluation and register for classes at Orientation.

If you want to live on campus you have to put your housing deposit in, before a certain date. If you are living off campus I'm pretty sure you don't have to pasy it. Chris will correct me, but that is what I'm pretty sure about. I know I had to have mine in before May 1st 2008, I'm not sure what you are; spring applicant, or fall applicant, so I don't know the dates yet.

My D's first choice is Stony Brook and she will be applying within the next week. She goes to a big NYC school with a senior class of about 1000 kids, and the guidance counselors have this schedule, by last name, for issuing the school report, recommendations, etc. Based on her last name, they will be sending out the package at the end of this week or early next week.

As you probably know, the NY Times has reported that due to the economic crisis, many kids are applying in greater numbers to the good state school (apprently Binghamton apps are up 50% year-to-date). Have you folks at SB seen a similar rise in apps?

My daughter has good grades and would fall right in the mid-50% range at SB so we are a bit concerned.

We won't know yet, unfortunately. We probably won't know what this year's pool will look like for another couple of weeks, but yes, we are seeing a significant rise in the number of applicants. What that will mean for decisions... we don't know. I promise I'll try to deliver more information here as soon as we know some more.

One more thing. I spoke to my D, and she is thinking about applying EA. She knows that the deadline is Nov 15. THe SB web site indicates that, for EA, "supporting documentation" must be received by December 15. Is her high school's package of transcripts/recommendation, etc considered "supporting documentation" ? The reason I ask is that it is highly unlikely that SB would receive this document by Nov 15.

I'm not trying to parse words (I'm not a lawyer or anyhting :) ), but I want to get some clarification.

Yes. The application has to be complete by December 15. That includes test scores/transcripts/etc. Just the EA Application has to be in by 11/15.

Just wondering how students can check their admission status online (e.g., by seeing the link to 'deposit'). I thought it said on the website that online decision info will not be available until Feb?

It'll be on the SOLAR system. Once you've applied, you'll get an e-mail with your Stony Brook ID number and a password to log into the system. Everything will be on there.

And yes, that information -- for regular fall applicants -- will not be available until after Feb 1. (EA folks will see it around Jan 1.)
