do detentions matter?

i’ve gotten detentions for getting to school late (majority of the time, it’s less than 2 minutes late).
i also recently got a detention for going to the music hall instead of staying in library when i was supposed to be staying in the library.
detentions at my school are pretty casual. it’s just half an hour of sitting in a room and doing homework before/after school. there are more serious detentions, like spending saturday morning at school, but i’ve never had one of those.

do colleges care about little things like these? i’ve always been a really good student and am never rude and disrespectful; i just sometimes can’t get to school on time.

Colleges will determine the importance of your detentions on admissions. Why do you arrive at school late? If your detentions are related to tardiness, then be prepared to explain why that happens. Also, entering classes late is a distraction to students and teachers. You are entering a new school. Get to school on time in college.

Does your HS even report these detentions to colleges? Most don’t.

But no, colleges do not care about detentions for little things like arriving late, using a cell phone, going to Mickey D’s for lunch. They tend to be more concerned with major transgressions like academic dishonesty, weapons possession, drug dealing, and the like.

That said, when you get to college, it will be considered rude and disrespectful to the professor and the fellow students to consistently arrive to class late. So hopefully, for their sake, you are able to correct this behavior.
