Do Faraway College Choices Lead to Long-Term Relocation?

Who knows where a twenty-something will "settle down" and what does that mean anyway? I don't think it's uncommon at all to stay near the college area for a few years after graduation but it seems fairly typical for people to move every few years. My only hope is that when my kids have kids, they're within a days drive.

So do I, Kathiep. I am missing out on my niece and nephew which saddens me greatly. I do think where they go to college does play a role in where they may end up settling. There are some places that just would not get the out of town folks they have, if it weren't for the colleges around there. I know my son is probably going to stay up by his college for a year or so afterwards as he already has gotten his feelers out for jobs there, and it looks promising. He may find better here, but he would have to start looking again, whereas it was a natural process where he is currently looking. Just makes it easier. No way he would be where he is living if it weren't for the college.
