or are they mixed in with the upper class?

Usually your roommate is a freshman, but other classes will probably be on the same floor as you.

A lot of schools have "freshman dorms" where the majority of freshman live.

Generally, freshmen are with freshmen, but you can end up rooming with just about anyone unless you are in a freshman dorm.

Dorms for each class. You progress with your class from dorm to dorm throughout the years.

Some schools have dorms like brandnew described. Others mix it up a little. You'd have to find out for your specific school.

I don't know of any schools where your roommate would be an upperclassman- usually freshman have freshman, etc. I guess it would be possible, just probably very very rare...?

I've heard/seen a few instances where a freshman has an upperclassman as a roommate. In fact, I think there is currently a thread about it. It happens, but it's not that common.

BTW, not all schools have seperate dorms for each class. In fact, I know many people that lived in the same building from their freshman year to the time they moved/graduated. I also know that the classes are mixed up at the school I will be at this fall.

in my school, all the freshmen live together and the space is reserved for us. once ur a sophomore, u can kinda go out into the other dorms where its predominantly upperclassmen and if u do have upperclassmen friends then u can dorm with them

there are no specific "freshman dorms" at my school, but typically freshmen live on south campus and upperclassmen live on north campus. the housing people have recently been trying to mix it up more and have been placing more freshmen on north campus. this means that it's not unheard of for a first-year to get placed with a sophomore if the sophomore didn't request a specific roommate. if the freshman called the housing office and complained, though, he'd probably get switched because everyone knows how much that would suck..

Back in ancient times when I was a freshman, I was placed in a nice triple with two other girls: one other freshman and one sophomore transfer who was new to the college. That worked out well.

I've been put in a triple- one of my roommates is a fellow freshman, but the other is a sophomore. Didn't think it would happen, but I guess it can!

last year i was in a triple. one of my roomies was a freshman, like me, and the other was a sophomore transfer. it all worked out. i miss them, actually :(

Usually but one of my friends is rooming with a sophomore at UF next year.
