sophmores in residence halls

How common is it for sophomores to live in the residence halls in the units (as in the ones where the whole floor shares a bathroom)? I know there are usually a decent amount of sophomores in the mini-suites, but I put a regular double on my housing app as my preference because it seemed more social. But now I'm thinking that I don't want to be the only sophomore on my floor.

And if I'm getting a random roommate, do they tend to put sophomores/older students together or am I likely to get a freshman roommate? (The girl I was planning on getting an apartment with since Dec just now decided to dorm with her current roommate again, and by now all my other friends have already found roommates for next year :( )

Also is there any way to change my housing preferences even though the deadline has passed?

nah there’s definitely a fair amount of sophomores. I mean there is a chance you might end up being the only sophomore on a floor, but just make friends with the freshmen. They’re not going to mind being friends with someone older.

Because you’re a second year, you get to choose the room of the assigned building so the only way (that I can think of) you’ll get a second year roommate is if another 2nd year chooses the same room. Otherwise, it’s random and you might be paired with a transfer, but most likely a freshman.
Try e-mailing the housing to see if you can change.

Oh okay. How does picking your room work? Would I be able to purposely pick a room that another sophomore (without a specific roommate in mind) has chosen?

(Like, does it show which rooms have space for one more person, and if so, do people with roommates in mind get automatically put together so I don’t accidentally maybe pick a room with someone who has a roommate in mind?)

yea it’s basically what you said if I remember correctly. Basically, you get your assigned unit…say unit 2 for example. then you can go to the unit 2 underground thing where they have a blueprint of all the rooms and check out where you want. Log on and there’s just a drop down list of the rooms and buildings (no you can’t choose a double if you’re assigned a triple even if the option is there lol). If the room is full already, it’ll tell you to choose again and I remember there was a way to tell if someone had already picked that room, but I can’t specifically say how.

There’s nothing automatic about choosing a room. If you and a roommate want to be together, just make sure to pick the same number…I guess the potential problem lies in a triple and you may end up being third wheel, but like I said, there’s a way to tell if people have already picked the room or not.

Don’t worry. I have 14 sophomores living on my floor this year. I am a freshman planning to live in the regular unit res hall next year as well. It will not be that bad. There are even junior transfers who live in the res hall that I am in this year. They seem to be fine.

I’m actually worried about the same thing. I think practically my whole floor is moving out, so I might end up being the only sophomore on my floor next year, since I’m planning to stay in the same room. And I picked a triple so my roommates will probably be freshman, since I assume most sophomores choose doubles or minisuites.

they can choooose whatever they want. doesn’t mean they’ll get doubles. in fact, i wouldn’t be surprised if the school purposely put them in triples because doubles are a hell lot more enticing (read as look at ALL DAT SPACE) for incoming kids than triples. Don’t be so worried. Why don’t you guys want to befriend freshmen?

i don’t mind befriending freshman. i just don’t want to be the only sophomore. it seems like people in the same year would have more in common with each other
