From outside scholarships combined w/ grants from the school, i don't have to pay any money out of my own pocket for this year. So were the textbooks included in the estimated cost of the school?

Textbooks are not included. What is left over from the FA will can then be used to buy books and etc…

textbooks aren’t included in the cost…but if there’s money left in financial aid can then be used towards books? then we’d have to use the school bookstore to get books and be on like a quarterly payment plan, right? i thought the textbooks were covered in the FA when you add up room/board+tuition+transportation, etc. all adding up to ~2700.

and where does work study fit into all of this?

What in the world are you guys talking about?

[Budgets for Undergraduates 2009-2010](http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/finances/financial-aid/budgeting/undergraduates-20092010.html)

exactly! that’s what i was confused about. ok so fees are 25,000 and not 27,000 per year like i thought. ok so FA does cover textbooks then, right? but we’d need to order from the bookstore and then have FA cover it over the 3 quarters…?

They’re just giving you an amount that they decide is reasonable. Much like “personal expenses” and “transportation,” they’re leaving it up to your good judgement to not blow it on something other than books.

So yes, books are included in your financial aid. They divide your financial aid into 3 so you don’t screw up and spend a lump sum and not have enough in the winter to pay fees. Besides, they don’t actually have the money out there to give you, they’re just giving you credits to cancel out their fees.

How much financial aid are you getting? Are you living on campus?

so don’t they give you money for the winter quater too?!!? or is the money you have now all you’re gonna get for the whole year?

i have 5,500 in loans and work study and the rest is grant money, and yeah i’m living on campus. my loans are going to be disbursed close to almost when school starts and they mentioned that i’d have a little bit of credit even after paying my registrations fees for fall quarter. that’s probably what it’s for then, right?

Everything informational has been already posted.

@Sonykid: Once again, as it has been stated in this thread and numerous other ones, the financial aid, scholarships, w/e it is youre getting was divided into 3. By doing this, the school ensures that you have money to cover some of the fees for each quarter.

Because they do this, that means that you WILL receive money in not only the winter quarter also, but also for spring.

do they give you a credit in your university account or deposit that left over money in your bank account if you are enrolled in Direct Deposit?

i’m thinking they’ll probably credit your account and not your bank account. cuz that credit could help if for some reason you’re in deficit the next quarter or something.

oh ok, thanks!

they credit your account and then they disburse any left over funds into your bank account if you have direct deposit set up, and they usually put the excess funds into your bank account a couple days before the first day of classes

^ what blueskypinkcloud said. they automatically subtract tuition and housing costs along with those random registration/orientation fees and then the remaining amount of money is credited to your bank account.

thx thx thx
