Do HYPSM-level schools have ratty old halls too?

It seems any building on campus built between the post-war period and the 80s is an eyesore/horror movie set.

But it's a state flagship, so I was wondering what $50,000 annual tuition bought.

Is every building completely pristine, and all lab equipment is all-new and so forth?

Or do you have your half-refurbished junk heaps too?

It’s the same.

The only difference is that most super-endowed top universities commissioned world famous architects to design their buildings. After winning all sorts of architectural awards, the buildings proved to be ill suited for their purposes and difficult to maintain.

Honestly, most of our buildings have been renovated and are in fact quite pretty, and not even remotely “ratty.”

Almost every college on earth spends exorbitant amounts of money on the exterior appearance of their campus while letting the interiors of classrooms rot. It’s sad, really.

[Design New Haven: Renderings and Models of New Yale University Residential Colleges Released](Design New Haven: Renderings and Models of New Yale University Residential Colleges Released) indicates that Yale is spending $600 million for dorms for 800 students ($750,000 per bed).

Where else can you rent a $750,000 place with food for $12810 for nine months, or $1,423 per month (Yale’s room and board charge)?
