i was formerly a student at america's 'top' engineering school, but due to pertinent medical issues (needed major surgery), i had to take a leave of absence from school in march (spring semester) of my first year. i only got credit for my first semester, because i dropped my second semester subjects midway through.

all would be well if i were going back to my previous school; however, it doesn't offer my choice of major (dietetics), and it wasn't really a good fit for me. now, i'm looking to transfer elsewhere for next year.

i'm wondering whether to apply as a freshman or transfer. confounding this is the fact that in addition to the credits from my one semester at college, i also have credits for ten advanced placement classes i took in high school. hopefully, i can apply as transfer; otherwise, i'm screwed because the freshman application deadlines are looming.

Most schools will consider you a transfer student if you have attended some college post high school graduation. Of course, you will have to double check this with each school because schools can vary how they define “some college.”

“A student who has graduated from high school and has enrolled in a regular session at another college or university is considered a transfer student.”

I’m pretty sure though that in your case it could go both ways. I would check individually with each of the schools you’re interested in applying to.

Your case could go either way, it depends on how the college defines a transfer applicant. At some schools, just taking 1 college course post HS makes you a transfer, while at others, if you have less than a full year of college coursework post HS, you will still be considered a fr applicant.

Go the college websites, there is no general answer to your question.
